Just finished voting NO to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic bid...

My vote is in, much to the chagrin of the city I'm sure. I thought something about this plebiscite/referendum seemed a little fishy though....

Don't think Americans have a lock on election "errors"...They moved our voting centers...One would think common sense says hold all elections in the same place....nope...they moved the voting sites and it was a lot harder to finally get my ballot in.

Funny how the government can manipulate a vote just by the slightest "inconvenience"...

Anyway, I voted no because i don't believe the olympics represent anything anymore. I'd like to believe it once was about building community spirit but the thought of million dollar NHL players skating around with gold medals strapped around their necks is not exactly something I can aspire too, so why the fuck should I rally to support them?

Besides, anyone who has a shred of common business sense will see that the budget/accounting for these games is about as watertight as an Enron sponge. Theyve conveniently left out he Vancouver Convention Center in any of the bid materials when its $450 million in renovations is cleary tied to the bid....

I noticed the chinese population is out on this one. unlike the turnout for the civic and provincial election....

I wonder how that will play into it.

i haven't followed that aspect to it. I wonder how the chinese press have been covering it and if they for the most part vote as a block yay or nay. I am out the door now - I hear the turnout has been better so far then the recent civic election. Makes sense - more at stake for the city and our economy.

I am generally in favour of the games but am scared that there will be all sorts of backroom deals for construction...projects that will lead to cost over runs and manipulation and money going for things that would better be spent on real immediate needs like healthcare...and most of all I think that there will be such an imbalanced and disproprtionate benefit for property owners and a few others so the benefits won't be universal for all...but there are so many potential pluses on the other hand as well...so - I have a lot of thinking to do while i walk over.

At least canadians are a little interested in the wintersports iun general as opposed to USA which cover highschool events better than the olympics. Pure comedy...... Remember all the big american newspapers during the saltlake Games.....no coverage at all.....
