So what kind of Bitcoin site are you starting?

I'm currently building a mainstream one.
Selling something that is wanted world wide, hard to get and almost impossible to find payment solutions for.
Nobody else is doing it. I will be the first.
I will get paid in Bitcoins with a 0.5% transaction fee and no risk of cb's. And once they are in your wallet they will just get worth more and more.

So how are you gonna get your coins?

Why would I want to start any site with a currency that I would guess less then .005% of the population has even ever heard of?

not to mention there is nothing stopping everyone from making their own version of bitcoins. if google decided to make one bitcoin would die pretty quick i'd imagine.

it's a good question, i was wondering the same so i looked into why wordpress and reddit have announced they are accepting bitcoins::

Accepting bitcoin will allow the site to take payments from anywhere in the world, according to Reddit's blog.

The virtual currency is looking increasingly attractive to online merchants, who run the risk of incurring a "chargeback" by banks if someone fraudulently makes a purchase with someone else's credit card details. Due to its cryptographic verification system, bitcoins cannot be fraudulently spent, which relieves merchants of chargeback worries.

As with many Web-based services, payments for those features are dependent on credit card transactions and eBay's PayPal service. But WordPress wrote on its blog that PayPal doesn't serve more than 60 countries, and credit card companies have restrictions due to political, fraud, and other reasons.

"With Bitcoin we join a new digital economy that doesn't leave anyone behind, essentially making financial transactions open source -- something WordPress.com is behind 100 percent," WordPress said.

Every person that hits my site looking for a certain product will instantly know about Bitcoins and because they basically can not order my product anywhere else online i'm pretty confident they will have no problem getting a Bitcoin account. They will be happy they can actually pay.

It wouldn't make sense if i can use cc or paypay instead. Then there is no point offering Bitcoins. (edit: actually it makes a lot of sense to offer it as an alternative payment option, which i do on a paysite) You must've missed the part where i said i offer something that has no other payment options.

these guys launched a discount electronics store that only accepts bitcoins

Company representatives claim that by not having to pay credit card fees, they will be able to keep prices 1 to 10 percent lower than the top competitors. And by doing so, they are hoping the company will be so successful that it eventually fails.

You see, profit is not the main goal of the project. Roger Ver, the founder of the site, launched it to serve as a high-level demonstration for companies like Amazon and NewEgg, a lesson in the benefits of Bitcoin. If any of these companies begin taking payments in Bitcoin, representatives at BitcoinStore say they will close shop in triumph.

"The point of the site is to show both consumers and business owners that using Bitcoin can drastically lower the cost of providing products," says Jon Holmquist, the head of marketing for BitcoinStore.

                            damn, frank you are fast,
if you really have some special products then people will buy it no matter what.
i dont recall the product/site but on one site they were only accepting certain virtual currency , and their partner site allowed paypal to their currency exchange, i had no other option , so i purchased their currency and then the product, it was virtual item, i guess.
i gotta learn the bitcoin thing.
i never trusted the bitcoins or any other virtual currency.

Working on a e-shop for my comics (Zen Cart with OKPay module). If it works out I would be free from the ridiculous censorship by banksters and CC companies, def worth to invest some time and work. If not I have wasted a few days of work but at least learned a little bit about Zen Cart.

But the internet is not currency. Otherwise, it would already be under some sort of control and taxed, which they are slowly inching towards anyway. Sooner or later they will screw up the net.

The concept of bitcoin is great and there is money to be made. I'm personally just more comfortable putting my money into hard assets instead of cyber currency that doesn't even exist and is flipping the bird at all governments, banks, and global power players.

The FBI sees the anonymous Bitcoin payment network as an alarming haven for money laundering and other criminal activity ? including as a tool for hackers to rip off fellow Bitcoin users.

That?s according to a new FBI internal report that leaked to the internet this week, which expresses concern about the difficulty of tracking the identify of anonymous Bitcoin users, while also unintentionally providing tips for Bitcoin users to remain more anonymous.

The report titled ?Bitcoin Virtual Currency: Unique Features Present Distinct Challenges for Deterring Illicit Activity,? (.pdf) was published April 24 and is marked For Official Use Only (not actually classified), but was leaked to the internet on Wednesday.

In the document, the FBI notes that because Bitcoin combines cryptography and a peer-to-peer architecture to avoid a central authority, contrary to how digital currencies such as eGold and WebMoney operated, law enforcement agencies have more difficulty identifying suspicious users and obtaining transaction records.
?If Bitcoin stabilizes and grows in popularity, it will become an increasingly useful tool for various illegal activities beyond the cyber realm,? the FBI writes in the report. ?For instance, child pornography and Internet gambling are illegal activities already taking place on the Internet which require simple payment transfers. Bitcoin might logically attract money launderers, human traffickers, terrorists, and other criminals who avoid traditional financial systems by using the Internet to conduct global monetary transfers.?
There have been several cases of hackers using malware to steal the currency in the virtual wallet stored on a user?s machine.

Last year, computer security researchers discovered malware called ?Infostealer.Coinbit? that was designed specifically to steal bitcoins from virtual Bitcoin wallets and transfer them to a server in Poland.

One Bitcoin user complained in a Bitcoin forum that 25,000 bitcoins had been stolen from an unencrypted Bitcoin wallet on his computer. Since the exchange rate for bitcoins at the time was about $20 per bitcoin, the value of his loss at the time was about $500,000. A popular web hosting company called Linode was also infiltrated by an attacker looking to pilfer bitcoins.

And there have also been cases of hackers attempting to use ?botnets? to generate bitcoins on compromised machines.

So if you purchased something from California using bitcoin the state of California wants their cut no matter where the purchaser resides. This is the reason why sites like Amazon charge sales tax on many sales even if the purchaser resides in another state.

                                                                                            completely wrong.

                                                                                            here is the correct way:

If you are running a business in a origin-based state, you would collect sales taxes for your state on all of your retail sales.

However, if you are running a business in a destination-based state, you would not have to collect your state's sales tax on sales that are shipped out-of-state. You would also not have to collect sales taxes for the customer?s state unless you have Nexus, or a physical presence, in that state. The customer would simply pay the sales/use tax on their own.

                                                                                            Comment
