Prouty was initially undecided on whether or not to release the tape, but says, "I felt an obligation for all the people that couldn't be there. You shouldn't have to be able to afford $50,000 to hear what a candidate actually thinks."

Before appearing on MSNBC, Prouty told the Huffington Post that he had actually met Romney at a previous private fundraiser, and the candidate didn't make a good impression. As opposed to Bill Clinton, who made an effort to greets the cooks and waiters at another event, Romney didn't acknowledge Prouty's presence when he gave him his drink of choice, diet coke with a lemon twist, without asking. "He took it and turned and didn't say anything," says Prouty. "I presented him the exact right drink that he wanted ... Had it there, sitting there on a napkin. He took it out of my hand and turned his back without a 'thank you' or anything else."

Prouty noticed the same attitude when Romney arrived at the fateful dinner party on May 17, 2012 and made a crack about speeding up his service, though the waitstaff wasn't running behind. However, what really offended Prouty was Romney's description of touring a factory in China where workers are packed into dormitories surrounded by barbed wire (to keep out all the people desperate to work there, the bosses told Romney). "He just walked though this horrendous place and thought, 'Hey, this is pretty good,'" said Prouty.

Interestingly, while it was the "47 percent" comment that caught America's attention, Prouty remained more focused on Romney's warped view of the Chinese factory. While researching the issue he found an article by David Corn of Mother Jones and got in touch with his researcher, James Carter IV. On Wednesday night, Corn shared a more detailed account of how he got in touch with Prouty, and their concerns for his privacy.

Prouty told Ed Schultz that he deliberated about releasing the video for about two weeks, and was leaning against it when he came to a realization in the middle of the night. "I walked into the bathroom and I just looked in the mirror and the words 'you coward' just came out of my mouth," he said. "I just looked in the mirror and said, 'You're a coward. You're an absolute coward.'"

Still, Prouty decided to remain anonymous during the election, partly because he was worried about losing his job and becoming the target of a smear campaign, but also because he didn't want to distract from the video. "I wanted Mitt Romney's words and Mitt Romney's only," he says. "I wanted his words to be the center of attention." It's a bit surprising to see someone hold off on claiming their 15 minutes of fame these days, but it sounds like that's the kind of guy he is. Corn explains that after a bit of Googling he confirmed that the filmmaker isn't one of the two "David Prouty"s who have been arrested or incarcerated, but the one who saw a woman drive her car into a Florida canal and heroically jumped in to save her.

Don't get me wrong, waiters, people at the drive up window... I'm nice and cheery and quick to thank them. But no one is required to "thank them" for doing their fucking job. And don't give me no shit it's a crappy job; I've worked fast food, catering, and much worse.

This fucker was a gold digger. He got close to a "star" and took advantage of it.

He turned down every interview that offered to pay him. Who cares anyway, for all we know the guy saved planet earth and deserves everything he gets.

Who ever claimed that Romney, or anyone else, is required to say "thank you"? No one ever made that argument, ever.

People are just saying that Romney is jerk for not saying "thank you".

Doing something decent when it's not required is what decent people do.

I had a buddy who had a few moneyed friends who wet to Harvard. He told me one day that one of his Harvard pals the night before told him not to thank the waiter at dinner because "it's his job." Imagine that - being admonished for being polite - as if it's ever the wrong thing to do.

Mitt is that kind of prick, clearly. The guy wasn't useful to Mitt, so why would he acknowledge his existence at all? It the kind of entitled attitude that sometimes develops when one never has wanted for anything in their life, and other humans' only function has ever been to serve them. People become objects. "Lowly waiters."

And don't blame this guy for that video. All he did was press a button. Mitt did the rest. If what he said hadn't been grotesque, there'd be no story.

I couldn't care less if he thanked the waiter and/or failed to go back and say hi to the waiters and cooks and staff. Clinton loves to campaign so hearing that he does that doesn't shock me. Clinton could also just be back there trying to score some weed or hit on a waitress too

The thing this guy said that I do agree with is that you shouldn't have to spend $50K to find out how a candidate really feels about a subject.

I don't think it's sour grapes for being ignored. He's just pointing out that Romney is the kind of person who is above everything, and how a person treats waiters and servers shows a lot about that person's character. We should give a shit about the character of someone trying to be president.

John Stewart pointed out something about Romney on the Daily Show that was kind of funny, but also very telling of who this guy is. There was a news piece recently showing what life was like for the Romneys post-election. There was video of them at a park, and Mitt goes "My family loves to gather in wide open spaces".

Stewart said, "Wide open spaces? It's what other "humans" call "parks". This is why you lost the election. Because most people don't think you're another human.

and this was the guy's main problem. He's just an out-of-touch asshole. I was having dinner with my in-laws a couple of days before the 47 percent video came out. My father-in-law is the king of Republicans, and had no idea about my politics because we just never talk about that stuff. He was going on and on about Obama, and I mentioned that Romney is a slimeball, and we're all going to know it between now and the election. He'll let his guard down and show everyone that he's a scumbag and predatory capitalist responsible for the destruction of companies and people's lives. So he became righteously indignant about the whole conversation and I couldn't even talk to him for the rest of the night.

The 47 percent video came out a couple days later, and it was just one in list of things showing the real Romney. Even worse was the changing of positions constantly. It shows zero integrity.

In the end it was just obvious that he thought being president was his birthright. Fuck that guy. He can crawl back under his pile of money and never show his face again.

Yep Im listening to Ed and the guy said he just wants to go back to his life. He has had all types of offers. He is done. He felt the country needed to know the truth.

Do I hold the door open for people. DAILY. I also refer to people as "sir" just as a common courtesy. Just because some one is driving a twenty-three year old truck with 200k miles on it doesn't mean they don't have twin brand new Jaguars in the garage.

This is exactly what I said - If I understand correctly, people paid $50k a pop to eat a meal with Romney. I'm guessing Romney's time was pretty important, and if he was speaking on a subject at that exact moment maybe he failed to pause his conversation and acknowledge the waiter because he brought us a second glass of water.

I'm a nice guy, I try to put a smile on the cashier's face at the drive through and what because I know their job sucks - been there done that - but if I'm in mid sentence when a waiter or waitress brings a drink to my table it's entirely possible that I might not say "thank you" or even acknowledge them.

It takes a fraction of a second, literally, to say "thank you." Mittens never learned to treat people with respect. He's never had to.
