When I worked at a business where we bought a lot of pizza for employees, we had a policy where we were to tip $1 a pie for deliveries of pizza. We often got 40-50 at a time, and while that is a $40-50 tip, those delivery guys always made sure our orders were right and on time.Comment

You get amazingly good customer service in Japan. While everything is expensive, there is no tipping...
Be careful not to tip in a restaurants in Japan, it could be construed as an insult.
The general ideology is that the wait staff works for the restaurant as a team and if a customer enjoys their visit that they will return to the restaurant again, refer others and bring more business. I guess you could say, your gratitude and repeat business is all the tip they need.
Exception: I have been to some restaurants in Tokyo who received a lot of tourists and understood that some foreigners tip. In these rare cases, tipping is accepted but not expected.

This brings about an interesting question. So lets say the industry changed. They did away with all tipping and the restaurant owners raised the wages of the servers so that they were equal to what they were making before with average tips. You know that cost is going to get passed on to you the customer.
Assume the average meal at this place is $20. Which would you rather have?
A. Your meal is $20 and you tip the server whatever you want based on how good you felt the server was so assume you tip 20% your meal would be $24.
B. There are no tips and your meal just costs $24 and you hope you get good service and if you don't your only means of showing your dissatisfaction is to complain.
To me, in the end, you are going to pay for the tip one way or another. Personally, I would like to have some control over it.Comment
