Have fun with it - buy something old and make it new again.
A year and a half ago I bought a 1990 Chevy Stepside with 160k miles on it. Prior owner had it rigged up to be a "mud truck". Nothing worked. No heat, no ac, engine stalled out for no reason, missing back brakes, etc etc etc. I'm not much of a mechanic but it was fun fixing it up. Whatever I couldn't do I had my local shop do. Nu paint job, I put on new trim by myself - bumper, grill, etc - nu tires and wheels... Runs like a fucking champ.  With the four wheel drive, taking my kid to school means avoiding surface streets and then hitting that forty foot long mud puddle.
