    Would you be pissed if you got a "your kid is too fat" letter from their school?

    There has been a story in the news the last few days talking about some schools that are now sending letters home to the families of overweight kids telling them that their kid is overweight and urging them to do something about it.

    Would getting this kind of letter piss you off? I don't have kids, but I guess if I did it would all depend on how the letter was worded. If it seemed like they were genuinely concerned for my kids health I might take it to heart, but if it came off as, "Your kid is a fat fuck we are tired of looking at." I might be a little angry.

      well its kinda rude i guess but people would rather get upset over the letter than get upset over little johnnys future health problems because that would be a direct reflection of their parenting.

              i find the irony of the whole situation angering. the public school system is pushing shitty processed food on kids with a soda vending machine along with it. and then telling parents their children are overweight. and it was probably some big fat pig of an administrator that wrote the letter......both my children are thin, but i would sue the shit out of the school if they tried interfering with my family.

                                          Is it something the school shouldn't be involved in doing? That could be argued, but it likely doesn't cost a whole lot.

                                                      The grade school in my town has a vending machine with pop, water and juice (which is just as bad as pop) in it. They also have the cafeteria which serves whatever is on the menu that day and they have a separate pizza and hamburger bar so you can have pizza or a burger if you don't like what they are serving. Many school actually have contracts with cola companies to carry their products.

                                                      When I was in school they had no vending machines, but in high school they did sell milkshakes. I had a friend that ate a milkshake and an order of fries for lunch every day.

                                                                      when you get to high school, there is a cafeteria, you can eat fries and gravy all you want, but you are 13 / 14 at that point, you know exactly what fat is, what it means, and how other kids act towards you when you are fat. Once you are a teenager, regardless of how controlling your parents are, what you eat is something you pretty much control yourself.

                                                                      if you don't like what the cafeteria sells, send a lunch for your kid, stop blaming the schools for all the parenting fails. It is not the teachers job to raise your kids, each teacher has 1 job and that is to teach your kid 1 subject, and last time I was in high school "don't get fat" was not a course in the curriculum. That's parental work.

                                                                      Anyways, that was besides the point, if my daughter came home with a letter from here teacher that said they were concerned about her weight, I would likely make my wife punch her in the face and say "get back to teaching her math, her weight is my issue not yours bitch" the bitch part would likely be silent.

                                                                          I don't have kids, I think it's more jealousy since they were my high school's football rivals and we only had one pop machine that was only plugged in off hours..

                                                                                  I have no problem with this practice. As long as the letter is worded correctly what's the problem?

                                                                                  Parents can either get all bent out of shape and stupid about it and offended or they can realise it's in their and their kid's own best interest to do something about it.

                                                                                  We had vending and pop machines when I was in school too (jr high and up, not grade school), but it was up to parents as to what goes in their kids lunches, not the school.


                                                                                  Btw, just how fat does a kid have to be to get such a letter? I'm thinking pretty fat.

                                                                                      at my grade school, all they ever sold was milk and that was only sold at lunch hour. they also had hot dog day every other week but otherwise, no vending machines, no cafeteria. if you want to control what your kids eat a lunch, pack them a lunch and don't give the money to take to school.
