Internet the greatest invention in your lifetime?

I think it is - maybe the greatest invention in history. Of course the Internet depended on previous inventions.
I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

Sometimes though I think life would be much easier without it, without technology at all. But unfortunately/fortunately there is no coming back, it is and we can adapt to it or die.

I'd have to say car is the greatest in history. Internet certainly in my lifetime.

The internet makes so many things possible.

I always think about how not that long ago you'd have to walk in your local bank branch every Friday to deposit your paycheck.

Going from 24 cans of beer in a carton, to 30 cans of beer in a carton, was a great step forward in our time.

              24 pack.

              To a 30 pack.

              Tins.

in my awake day I probably hardly spend more than 15 minutes at the most from being on the internet, whether on computer, laptop, or phone

                for sure the greatest

I think the computer is bigger than the internet. Not just for the sake that without computers there would be no internet, but think of all the things that rely on computers.

Biggest in history would have to be either manmade fire, electricity or the airplane.

Yes, and I grew up before computers became mainstream. I was in my early twenties when I built my first PC that I connected to the net. It's odd but my generation was kind of the generation just before the internet became a big deal and still to this day I know people I went to school with that don't have internet access.

In the near future I think 3D printing has the potential to be bigger than the net as far as how it affects your daily life., However the net will always be the biggest communications advance that will will likely ever see.

computers without the Internet sucked - i bought a computer in the 80's, it sucked, became a door stop. i understand that computers run the world - medicine, stock markets, banking, military, etc - but not much of an impact on how the average person lived their daily lives. the Internet changed practically everybody's daily lives.

The electric generator is the most important invention in the past couple of hundred years.

We would still be in the pioneer days without it. Everything else... vacuum tubes, transistors, integrated circuits, computers, the internet, would not exist if we were not able to generate electricity on demand. We would still be communicating by telegram.

In my lifetime... the internet is certainly hard to top. But we have not even started to see the potential of 3D printing yet.

I don't know about you, but computers were around decades before I was.

One can argue the Internet was too, but not like it is now.

The Internet has had (or will have) a greater affect on business and communication than television or the telephone.

Apart from the social interaction ( Facebook would be a relevant example) and that its entertainment value is a strong competitor to broadcast and cable TV (netflix, hulu, youtube are significant examples) the evolution of Internet founded business into the ecommerce venue will have a lasting affect.

It is now possible to sell many digital goods internationally with a low entry barrier for new businesses. The Internet has had a monumental effect on the financial trading markets also.

My grandparents saw the latter industrial revolution and the rise of the automotive age, my parents were the builders of the atomic and space age, we are the architects of the Internet age.

Internet for sure made me, and probably lots others, avoid to move to other cities or countries to find a job, simply could work from a bedroom or small home-office, this is perhaps a big difference. But, it could be, if some of us had "migrated" instead, today could have a bigger career in large corporations.

well, i am old enough to say that the home computer (C64/C128/Atari ST) had already changed my life before the internet came up.

but the internet surely changed my life (and profession) profoundly

I do in fact believe the Internet is greatest invention of all time up until this point.

My kid missed her favorite show the other day and the DVR didn't record it. We went to Hulu and guess what - It was online to watch for free.

I can now control the heat in my house from my car sixty miles away.

Twenty years ago if you wanted to know something or needed to settle a bet, you turned to your encyclopedias which were old, outdated, and rather expensive. Now my kid can look up any fact she wants on her cell phone.

I remember having to write letters to people... Now we just send them email. Or better yet, remember the Jetsons with their video phone? Well, now we have Skype and Facetime.

Look at all of us - we all work on the internet.

Name one invention that has changed our lives the way the Internet has. The only that comes close is the TV, and that's nothing compared to the Internet.

before the net computers were just about games, something to have fun and kill time. it became so much more with the internet and has influenced by life so much from what i do for a living to how i've met certain people in my life that without it, life would of turned out completely different.

and to all you people saying the wheel and whatever else, the question was "in your lifetime" not in history...

In my life time, I would say cell phones for sure. I had one that worked out of a suitcase type setup in the 90's had to position the antenna to lock onto a satellite. was really interesting watching the development of smaller phones over the years, still is.

It was fine untill Facebook came along and everyone started acting like cunts and pretending they were someone they aren't.

The fact that most people days online is spent on Facebook makes it less appealing than it used to be...
