Heart-warming tale...I generally see Christian rock or commercial religious music as just a crutch/gimmick for musicians that otherwise would never be able to build an audience following based upon their musical ability alone.

There are exceptions, and many mainstream artists create music which is obviously influenced by their religion/spirituality. Cat Stevens and Dan Peek (of America) were both great songwriters that walked away from pop music due to their religion.

I do like this song by Christian band Jars of Clay, produced by Adrian Belew (King Crimson, Bowie, etc):

Yeah. I was in jr. high. All the stupid hair bands were on the radio. Stryper found their little niche. They looked and sounded like the other bands, but had "god" on their side.

I've got quit a collection of hard rock/metal from the days and I even DJ'd back at a Christian station with my own hard rock and heavy metal show. Bands like Holy Soldier, Sacred Warrior, Barren Cross, Deliverance, Tourniquet, Bride, were all amazing bands.
