Will someone explain Big Bear to me?

The mountains are next to a desert (Palm Springs is desert right?) but have snow? How tall are they? Google Maps satellite view makes them look like foothills but I must be wrong?

Seems like weird geography to me.

Yeah, the snow made me go on a wiki hunt. If I ever lived in Cali, it would have to be a place like Big Bear City. I love the snow.

Cali got lots: http://www.totalescape.com/destin/snowtowns.html

Is it fake snow like the mid-Atlantic uses?

I just don't understand how you can be so close to LA, which has pretty pleasant weather year-round and next door to a desert and be like 1,000 feet up and get snow.

California is unique in that you can surf at the beach and snow ski on the same day in this state. I use to go up to Mt Lassen in August to play in the snow. It actually snows in LA county every once in a while

All I know is that's where Sarah Connor's mother lives, and that's where the Terminator killed her.

It's nearly seven thousand feet high. It is north, north east of Palm Springs.

Brett is right - California is large and diverse. Most people think of California as LA and San Diego, but that's only Southern California.

I grew up in San Bernardino, which is one of the major cities just below those mountains. Big Bear is the largest mountain range area in the region, in excess of 7k ft. Anywhere above 5k ft will get snow/ice.

All of southern California has very diverse topography because of the San Andreas Fault...which is the largest geological fault line in the world. It's a "strike-slip" fault, which causes many earthquakes and mountain generation. (I used-to major in planetary science in college.)

If that blows your mind, go to Vegas and drive 20 minutes to Mt. Charleston or Lee Canyon. You go from desert to winter and skiing.

I am proud to count myself as one of the people who have both skied and surfed in the same day.

As for snow, desert and Palm Springs: Have you ever heard of Mt. San Jacinto? It is right next to Palm Springs and it has snow on it. I am talking you drive 10 minutes and you are on the mountain.

Watch the video. You will see overly clothed people getting into a tram with desert heat and then exit and it looks like Siberia.

I've done it, my grand parents had a cabin in Big Bear when I was a kid, Mom took me to body surf at Zuma Beach in the morning and My dad took me to see my grandparents that afternoon. I think I was 12. Fun day.

When I lived in Redding California, I could stand in my front yard and see two glaciers , Mt Shasta and Mt Lassen on a sunny 120 degree day.

Technically you can do that here in Oregon too. Mt. Hood is about an hour's drive east from Portland and the beach is about 90 minutes west of Portland. The problem is that the skiing doesn't open until winter which means it is going to be pretty cold at the beach, but you still see some people out there in their wet/dry suits surfing when it is 50 degrees.

If you wanted to windsurf you can do that near the mountain so you could do both easily in an afternoon.
