I've read that 3D Printing is going to be a bigger tech boom than the internet was. Seems like every week I see some new idea or concept someone is working on that is something you wouldn't have ever thought they could do.

I've seen everything from medical uses where they replaced a women jaw bone with a 3d printed replacement to a guy that designed and created his own replacement heart valve.. I've seen one of the major universities working on a system that prints concrete structures, to potentially build homes. Then a concept of using robot 3d printers to use moon dust to create the basic structure for a moon base.

There are guys trying to create a working gun and just today I watched a video from the Ted Talks about a group that is trying to 3d print leather & actual beef that would replace the need for farm raised cattle.

Looks like the sky is the limit with this stuff, assuming they can actually keep advancing the technology which is mainly just limited to speed and materials. Anyone else following this shit?

Seems like it's 1990 again in relation to the possibilities of being on the ground floor with the internet.

My dad ordered a Replicator 2 a few weeks back. It should arrive shortly.

I am still waiting on a particular unit to go into production, but as soon as it does I will buy one.

Yea I was looking at the DIY kits, but the quality just isn't there with them. Likely neat to play around with, but for anything serious it's likely best to contract out the printing to someone that can print metal, ceramics or better grade plastics.

best buy of course, I put a T-bone in my printer and fucked it all up though,ended up printing a pic of a steak and eating that, taste like shit but I am losing weight

They are printing with way more than just plastic now. The medical industry is using titanium, there is ceramic even layered paper in some of the original printers. They are only going to expand on it.

These guys have quiet a few diffrent materals already in use, so it's only going to get more advanced.

I saw an interview with a guy who runs a small business out of his garage with a 3D printer. He is making about $200 per day just doing small custom projects for people. There was another business that makes custom prosthetic limbs for people with a 3D printer. They say it is ends up being cheaper for the people that get them, they often work better and if they break they can quickly print out another part.

It is a cool item that has a huge future in front of it.

Essentially they are protesting anti gun legislation by trying to show that advances in technology could get around any ban. I have really nothing against that as it's their right to protest.

The deal is they claim they are "trying" to build a working 3D printed gun that anyone could build at home. Yet all they seem to be doing is trying to replicate a AR-15 to get shock value.

If they were really interested in building a gun from 3D printing, they wouldn't be trying to replicate the AR-15 but rather would build something from scratch. Something designed to be built with plastics. However that probably wouldn't "look" as scary and get the shock value they are going for.

My brother has the MakerBot Replicator 2 and I got a chance to play around with it. It's pretty cool but the software that you need to use has a learning curve before you can make anything useful. They do have a website with a bunch of pre designed things you can use. It's pretty cool but not worth the $2500 he spent on it IMO.
