It can be difficult. Dogs I find are easier to coax into sleeping in that cats.
My dog Max would wake up at 5am and scratch and wander around and wake me up, since he was hungry. I started feeding him a little later at night, and he started waking up with me, around 7/8am. My cats however, wake up at 5am and make a great racket. That's why they arent allowed in the bedroom. Well, sometimes, but I always throw them out and close the door if they pester me.

Depends on what routine it gets used to...mine is up every morning at 7am because she expects her walk then. DST always throws her off for a week or so too.

Most animals have what seems to be an alarmingly good internal clock, and its for that reason that we purposely alter the feeding times with our horses. If they get on a strict schedule, at certain times they will expect to be let out, or fed at a specific time. Its the same with dogs. We feed at different times.. an hour late or an hour late so that if for some reason we don't make it home on time, we don't have issues. What you want to do is not give in to the demands of your dog. If he wakes up early, tough. He can wait until you get up (provided that you let him out late enough that he doesn't need to pee). A number of our friends that gave in, are now on their dog's schedule and not the other way around.

My dog is the laziest fucker in the house. He sleeps til 10am or so. He gets up when the kids come downstairs and he goes upstairs to sleep for a few more hours.

Nothing can be better than the life of a well loved house pet. I hope I am that fortunate in my next life.

When I got CJ, the boston in my avatar, the first day I got him from the pound. The next morning at 5am barking to go out. Once he got on our schedule that stopped. We feed the dogs once at 5:30 pm and they go out several times and right before bed. He then slept til the time we got up. He is gone now but the two I have left can go 12 hrs without going if they had to. They spoil me.

I guess it depends on the routine, and routines can be changed.
My and my dogs routine was to get up when I woke up, whether it was 8am or a few hours later, my dog was more than fine with that... He pees when I wake up... that was all he needed to know... (when I came home late, I made sure he also got his midnight piss of course) Teach your dog (puppy) that he pees at 06.00 am, and continue to do so for 1 year, and it will be hard(er) to change that routine... Teach him otherwise and it will be fine in my experience... more success rate with lazy dogs who like to sleep at your feet I guess :-)

Thankfully mine are lazy so they only get up when I do (times can vary) and only if I force them to when it's cold or rainy out.

My dog needs no such training. That's as long as the birds aren't keeping her awake.

My dog sleeps in the barn, so as long as she's not howling outside I dont notice when she gets up. I have gone out there around 7 though and she's still asleep

I taught my parrot to sleep late, by putting his cage in my bedroom. He quickly got the idea that if I'm asleep, he should be asleep or at least not be making much noise.

![]() One of mine awakens at 3:30 am on the spot and MUST be let out to pee and poop or he will shit under my desk in revenge. When he comes back in if I am still in bed he will jump up onto the bed next to me or my GF and pass out for a few hours. Generally he will camp out on the bed sleeping if I am and if not, he will just lounge around 'til feeding time when he goes into the big fenced enclosure to play with the others.
He indeed has a "Dog's Life"! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

first have to figure out what is making him/her wake up early.. bathroom? hungry? overslept? if you normally feed them a bit later it wont be food, if they go right before bed its not peeing (unless you sleep for more than 9 hours hehe) and if you don't exercise them enough they get restless as hell, and normally that is the biggest one. depending on breed you need to adjust to that.. i have athletic dogs so exercising them enough is a bit of work.
