any k-9 cops here? Do drug sniffing dogs work?

I refused a search of my car a while back. They called a dog that alerted to my car. I don't do any drugs and nobody else had been in my car for over a month. Of course the cops found nothing.

So my question is, Do drug sniffing dogs work? Or can the cops make the dog alert?

Cool. Seems like it would be a waste of time training those dog if they didn't work. But I did see a guy using one of those useless electronic sniffers in Juarez. Those just randomly go off.

I haven't heard of explosives getting past a dog though.

I have been through a couple of the internal checkpoints and had dogs run around my car. They didn't do anything. I noticed when the Highway Patrol checked my car and got the positive hit, The highway patrol guy was saying "go get it, go get it".

Or maybe I'm just be paranoid and the dog just happened to screw up this time.

The dog will typically 'sit' or 'bark' when it finds something without being told to find it.

The handler can 'trigger' the dog to alert.

Yes K-9 cops moonlight as GFY members.

Of course they work. I can't say how accurate they are but I'm pretty sure its not for show and if you are over the age of 8, you should realize this

Years ago in Phoenix I got pulled out. I pulled away at a high rate of speed from a marked highway patrol car at night; I just didn't see him. It was a full felony stop. I don't do drugs and had never been arrested but they were pretty confident I was hiding something. They searched my car with dogs - with my permission - and found nothing.

People fear the police and refuse to let themselves be searched. I don't get this. I got nothing to hide.

One of my best friends has been a K9 cop for about 10 years. He trains the dogs, does all kinds of searches and tracks and attends and teaches many seminars.

The dogs are very accurate and work well. They go through a lot of training and certification in order to be used on the job. That said, a lot of it depends on the handler. If a handler is pressing the dog it could trigger a false positive. Most good handlers just let the dog do its thing and they reward the dog whether they find something or not.

but i think there is some sort of 'system' where if the dog keeps getting false positives, no more dog

K9 cops live with their dogs and are practically joined at the hip. Best friends. The dogs have little behaviors that their master recognizes. Like a head tilt. When they see that, they encourage the dogs as dogs love praise. When they encourage the dog the dog has already given the signal they are onto something. The bark is just that, an intimidating bark. They aren't always right, but they are right enough times to keep them around.

Dogs give visual signals just like humans do. A stance, a look in their eyes, a head tilt, whatever.

Not all, but it's insane to believe that everyone on a force is clean. Sadly, if the leadership is shady, a lot more of the rank and file will be, too, which is why some forces are more corrupt than others.

If the leadership likes to look the other way the good cops become afraid to point out the bad ones.

yeah our cops would never train the dogs to do false alerts. you can trust the cops. they would never do anything shady. you should always let them search you.

and surely cops would never file a lawsuit agaisnt their own department over k9 dogs being trained to do shady shit so the departments can seize your property even if you didnt do anything. that would be horrible and just not happen. or would it?

Trained "drug sniffing" dogs can smell your car from over a mile away. They are trained to only react when they are directed to it, though. They only waste their time on targets that their masters aim them at. If you have drugs on you, a trained dog can smell you before you even enter the country. If you successfully manage to smuggle anything into any country, don't blame the dogs - they had you nailed. Laugh at the fat idiot human on the wrong end of the leash.

The dog has you nailed to rights, but all they want is a MilkBone. Its their handlers who fuck things up. You can never hide anything from a well-trained dog. On the other hand, it is laughably easy to fool a human.
