It's also a sign that you're onto something if others are doing it ... so it can be a good thing. Plus it'll make you work harder, which you've alluded to in another post where something similar happened.
It is a great idea and it will be interesting to see where both of you go in this space.
“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”
regarding paidperview.com, i love the idea and got lots of respect for pimproll but im just not convinced.
one 15min custom edited video. about 2 months live, 18k views, $2 revenue total.
its gonna take years for this one to even justify the time to edit and upload a video. Let alone production time and cost.
the winners with any kind of tube site is the owner, far behind the advertiser and even further behind, the content provider. as i see it, any content producer is better off just being an advertiser instead.

Most producers are giving away their clips for nothing more then a banner and a link back to their affiliate program. We do that and pay per view.
Most of the big studios are on board with PPV now and have uploaded their back catalogues. PPV is one extra monetization method.
If your goal is to shoot 1 scene just for use on PPV then no, find another money making venture.
im just saying, mind you it was only one single video, that the numbers tells me that I'm gonna need a massive back catalog to make any kind of money it. And just to even make it worthwhile. Seriously worthwhile. you gonna need to hire some Filipino do it or the time is better spent doing something else, even though its just an extra way to monetize content.
you got better sample data than me, and im sure you dont wanna share but let me ask anyway. what is the average revenue per video, and what is the average view per video?
On the other hand, yes the banner and link might make a bigger amount of money, so yes the ad revenue is a good way to set you apart from the competition.
Either way, as a content producer I would rather look into using trafficforce or similar than provide the content for any tube on the internets.
I could go on with my tube site research and decisions but i realize that im hijacking this thread so i wont, and i apologize.
either way, i truly respect ppv for the ad share, as its one of my pet peeves with every other tube.
PPV is terrific for content you have already monetized previously. HT is fantastic for domains you have not yet developed. People who misuse these tools because they think they are supposed to be a substitute for everything else are missing the whole point. HT dormant domains that easily pay for their own reg fees while providing SEO value and PPV access to traffic with payouts based on views for content you already cashed out are beautiful things if used properly...

Curious to know this too, since I am preparing to send out hundreds of exclusive clips for the first time to select tube partners, so I want to get some idea first about potential ROI, where the content will be appearing, etc.
