Any American webmasters living in Mexico??

And to be specific, the Tijuana area. I've been to Mexico before but I flew into Mexico City and stayed in deep southeastern Mexico. However, I have no experience with The Tijuana area.

I figure that I could find my content in the San Diego area while I'm staying in Mexico...Anybody here living in Mexico as a webmaster. that has anything good to say about it?

BVF, sounds like an interesting plan. Exchange rate is good. But you may want to live further in the interior cuz its pricier in Tijuana--I've been there three times. The further you get from the border the cheaper it is. The open question is infrastructure--Mexican ISPs and DSL availability.

I have a related question-if an american moves to mexico, can he make a living there?not as a webmaster-in another field

It's been three years now, but the last time I was in Mexico City and Guadalajara, both had broadband access. Granted I was staying in Japanese hotels...but Mexico isn't as "poor" as most perceive. I love the place and would like to retire to Mexico someday

yeah I know, I was down in the Veracruz area and you could build your own little brick house in a Mexican town for around $10,000 and it's paid for forever. However, I want to stay near the border. I don't have to stay right on the border but I don't want to be farther than an hour's drive.

Fuck...I'm just thinking that I can just live down there in an RV like the old retired folks do..That would be sweet....There's plenty of stuff on the baja peninsula to do (I heard)

There's lots of American retirees in Baja, actually. Just got featured in the news here in LA recently. Lots of artists, etc.

If you're going to live in Mexico, don't stay in TJ. There are so many nicer places down further into Mexico.

Veracruz was a killer place with some awesome seafood and great coffee. Also the oldest port in the WHOLE American continent. Has nice tall beutifull women. (Not as much Indian blood)

Yes, and their specialty, the Red Snapper Veracruz style is the bomb. I just wish I had brought my hot sauce from home. Also, there's a lot of Cuban's around there so that's another reason that the women there look better.

Yep TJ is fucking nasty. Rosarito is nicer. And it does get cheaper the further south you go. You can even pay off cops for real cheap a few hours from the border.

Tijuana? Dude, that is the asshole of Mexico. If you must stay near the border check out Nogales or Puerto Penasco. I prefer Mazatlan, but it's about a 15 hr. drive from the border. Do not move to TJ.

It's beautiful but very touristy and a little on the expensive side for Mexico. San Blas is a good alternative.

TJ is close to the border, ergo, it's very handy if you want to cross a lot.

And yes, there are nasty parts of this city. I just don't happen to live in one of them.

If the first guy wants to ask me anything, KK left my email addy.

I've lived in Central Mexico and roamed around a bit for several years.

I live here now because my house in on the ocean and it was cheap, it's also a tax shelter and I just happen to like it. This house in La Jolla would cost at least 2 million dollars.

It's cool to be able to be 15 minutes from the border. There are inconveniences, but I own this house, so here I stay.

There is broadband in Rosarito and Playas, the little private community I'm in doesn't have it. I'm about 8 kilometers north of Rosarito, but it's still legally TJ.

Hey BVF,

You're welcome to move to Ensenada.
It's 70 miles south of the border, cheaper than Tijuana and much more peaceful and safer.
Plus you always have San Diego just an hour away.
We have DSL so you don't have to worry about that.
Lots of Americans live in or near Ensenada.

But if you want to be closer to the US, there is Rosarito just 25 miles south of the border.

I did some research into relocating to Mexico specifically Nuevo Laredo, Ciudad Juarez.

I spoke with people in gov, their chamber of commerce, some lawyers who represent Americans trying to establish a biz down there etc and get ready to spend some cash.

Basically the way I was going to have to set up was to bring in a Mexican national as a silent partner (read bribe) that would do nothing but collect his share so that way I could conduct business down there.

Anyway long story short, I found it would be just easier to relocate to Vegas

Partner?
You don't need no stinkin' partner!
I think they just wanted your money.

The beauty of living close to the border is that you can have your money sent to US address which is just as well 'cause the postal service down here is a real shitty.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you do. Unless you are a Mexican citizen, you cannot own property in Mexico. You have to do it through a proxy party who is a Mexican national. That's a pretty big piece of the legal-fees pie down there.

I lived in Oaxaca, Mexico for a year before coming to work for Brad...

this would be south of Mexico City a good 6.5 hours via car.

no work permit required as there is no enforcement.

cheap food, land, services...

they were just getting dsl about 3 years ago.

actually a non-Mexican citizen can own land in Mexico (in his own name) as long as the land is no closer than 50 miles from the border and 50 miles from the coast.

Heather, can you answer a couple of questions:

1. How did you buy a house? I thought Americans couldn't owen property on the beach in Mexico? Was it a pain in the ass?

2. What's the deal on porn laws in Mexico?

3. Do you have to get some sort of work visa, or do they even care?

Thanks!
