I never saw 'inception' and my friend kept saying I have to see it because it's such a good movie, "but you have to keep watching to understand the rather complex story."

So i was very interested because i like those kind of movies. I think Memento is brilliant, and this was of the same director... Well I watched it a couple of weeks ago and my high expectations were not met at all. I don't care if a movie isn't complex, but don't claim a movie is complex when it's in fact the opposite. The dream in dream thing was extremely linear and easy to follow, so I'm not sure how anyone cannot understand that part.
If the storyline was good, I would've enjoyed it more, but the storyline was also extremely simplistic. Incomparable with Memento in my opinion, that was really well made, with twists you just didn't see coming at all. Conclusion, for me inception was a big disappointment.

I just watched a brain-burner last night called Beyond the Black Rainbow. Granted, I was high when I watched it, so that might have made it easier for me to tune into this movie's weirdness -- but I loved this flick.

It's probably going to be too slow for some people, but if you want to see something like 70's Kubrick/Argento, then you should check this one out. It really demands your full surrender, and you're going to either love it or hate it.

Haven't seen dune, only played dune strategy games (from the second and up).. is it really that crappy?

Were you loving that guy's performance as much as I did? A couple of those scenes he reminded me of Christian Bale in American Psycho.

Primer was great.

Gotta love a film made for $7k...that grossed over $400,000. :thumbsup

Primer is one of those movies that you enjoy without fully understanding. You just kind of know what happened, and it still makes sense.

Exactly. It was just stupid. I actually couldn't believe how they could bring out a movie like that.

crockett 12-03-2012 12:51 AM

A few that haven't been mentioned..

Equilibrium (kinda like the Matrix)
Super 8 (fairly original story-line produced by Spielberg but directed/written by J.J. Abrams)
Skyline (Kinda like war of the worlds, independence day)
John Carter (forgot this one it's sort of a avatar or dune sort of thing, lone hero fights for the underdog)

Exactly.

And oddly...I watched it without realizing how low budget it really was. I figured it was the intentional style of the film.

Skyline was horrible and the end was the worst. It was a SciFi TV movie at best.

Battle: Los Angeles is a much better option.

I loved inception. Maybe he didn't mean that it was hard to understand. Maybe he was talking about the ending - the very end - with the spinning top. How the movie ends and what actually happened are open for debate.

The movie deserves another watch from you though. You may not believe me, but the music plays a key part in the movie too. For example, the movie's theme music is actually slowed-down version of the song used to wake up the dreamers. When the music is heard by the dreamers, the music is perceived as being played slower, but to the audience is a cue that the dream is over. There are also some fun clues and gags in the movie. The first letter of each of the characters names spell "dreams". The license plates seen in cars when dreaming say "The Alternate State", etc.

If you want to see a "mini" inception, check out my other favourite Chris Nolan Movie : The Prestige. The premise about 2 magicians in the late 1800's seems boring as hell, but it's brilliant, and the very very last frame of the movie is a wonderfully satisfying mind fuck. Loved it.

I saw the preview for this a few times. It looks cool but.... is it? Do you recommend it?

Sci-fi has to be at least plausible, or, they have to explain WHY they can do something stupid like this to at least cover themselves.

I also hated the fact that the trailer for the movie shows the actual ending of the movie. Come. fucking. on! Whoever edited the trailer together should have been fired by ol' Ridley himself.

Super8 was "ok"... I get that it was all about Spielberg movies with endless references to The Goonies, Close Encounters etc, but it was missing something....

I liked Skyline even though it flopped. Great fx, good story, and a couple of decent scares.

never saw the others.

Here you go, Primer fans:

http://www.screened.com/primer/16-61...ne/131-248887/

If you thought you knew what you saw the first time you watched it, you may want to watch it again and pay closer attention. There are 9 different timelines and surprisingly, they all seem to connect properly and all addressed in the film. Can you spot them all without blowing your brains out?

Donnie Darko!!!!!! LOVE that movie!

If you get the chance to watch it, make sure you watch the original version and not the directors cut. The directors cut is AWFUL. They try to inject a little extra "science", and in doing so take away the cool spookiness of the movie. The original is so damn perfect. One of my all-time favourites.

That end with the spinning thing was so predictable, just horrible. I was expecting that ending the minute they introduced it in the movie and said what its for. I literally thought to myself 'Ah there it is. Surprising. The end.' Don't think i'll be watching it anytime soon again but who knows.

And you said the prestige, i've seen that one too and I did enjoy it, I agree that it's a good movie. Way better than inception.

I agree, the original theatrical version is better.

.

Of all the things to be bothered by in Prometheus, that would be the least screwy thing. The main scientist guy(Holloway) was kind of a wild card, and that scene was mostly to show his character a bit. Shaw based her faith on religion, but his was based on science. He noticed the terraforming and took a leap of faith based purely on science that there would be breathable air.

It was a ridiculous thing to do, but it made sense for that guy's character.

I have to tell you up front...this movie is slooooow. But its a good kind of slow. If you can't sit still for long stretches of weird(but interesting) scenes, then you should skip it. It's mostly an exercise in your patience, but if you like David Lynch, Kubrick or Dario Argento then you'll enjoy it.

The best advice would be to not expect anything from it, and take the ride -- and experience it while mentally impaired. The main performance by the male actor was one the creepiest(and funny) things I've seen in a long time.

My wife hated it.
