              Data centers can be turned off. Same thing happened in Egypt or one of the other countries that went through the uprising last year. They have also shut down other forms of communication out of the country, such as cell phones.

              There is a topic on Reddit that is saying the Syrian govt shut down the internet and is in the middle of a massive military campaign to over though the rebels.

                              How long until Hilary Clinton starts crying about turning back on the Internet in order to not deprive the people from valuable social media access.


                              Looks like other nations are learning. So I guess Syria will not be shooting itself in the foot and turning back on the Internet until it is good and ready.

                                              I don't know if this is genuine or not - Its being pushed as the reason the internet was cut in Syria - Allepo was hit hard and they did not want stuff like this to get out.

                                                  According to the Associated Press, the Syrian government blocked Internet access across the country on Thursday as rebels and government troops engaged in what has been described as a ?fierce battle? near the Damascus airport. Cellphone service has also been cut in ?select areas? and land telephone lines are said to be ?working only sporadically,? Reuters reports.

                                                  This disruption in communications is the worst Syria has seen since the civil uprising began 20 months ago, according to Reuters.

                                                  The news agency continues:

                                                  The past two weeks have seen rebels overrunning army bases across Syria, exposing [President Bashar al-Assad?s] loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power that he has used to bombard opposition strongholds.

                                                  Rebels and activists said the fighting along the road to Damascus airport, southeast of the capital, was heavier in that area than at any other time in the conflict.

                                                  As Next Web notes, it?s yet unclear as to whether the Internet blackout and breakdown in telephone communication is directly connected to the ongoing civil war; nonetheless, at the time of publication, most of Syria remains without online access.

                                                              I don't have time to watch this, but.... This will not stop such videos from getting out. If they cannot just dial into another country, they can walk a flash drive across the border.

                                                              World politics has changed. Twenty years ago a video like this could be shown on Sixty Minutes and there would be outrage, and it would be forgotten by the following week. Now it can go on the Internet, the entire world will see it, and it will forever be on line - meaning, even if the Syrian government remains in power they will have to answer for what they've done. (I'm sure both sides are just as guilty.)

During the spring uprising that happened in many of the middle east countries, it was largely twitter & facebook where the people of those countries organized.

                                                                                                                  Besides that if they are waging an attack to try and over through the resistance then even a short black out or delay to news getting out could be all the govt would need in order to do what they needed to do.

The western governments don't like when their control is diminishing in countries like that. When the dictator doesn't want to share his revenue he generates anymore with the US or when he wants to get rid of the dollar as a trade currency. That's when the troops start knocking on the door, the propaganda machine is turned on, and the country is getting 'liberated'.

There are dead little children in that video. I had to stop after 5 minutes. Between the stuff I saw in the army, and the fact that I have a little boy of my own, it's very difficult to look at that stuff anymore.
