One night we were just sitting here at the house when all of a sudden my block was invaded by the local police department.... Turns out the guy across the street was beating his wife, grabbed his gun, and was chasing her down the street.... Opps!Herschel Savage

I probably wouldn't get involved. You don't know what's going on. Just because the woman is being yelled at or hit doesn't mean she is this big victim. She could be driving him to do that stuff on a daily basis instead of keeping her mouth shut.
But if he is a drunk asshole and she is a defenseless little woman being smacked around, then perhaps you call the police.Comment

Wow, I actually agree with you onceOriginally posted by JohnnyClipsYou have to get involved if you want to change society
If you turn your head here then youre just as guilty as the abuser

Many years ago I lived in an apartment and the couple below me were always very loud. They argued a lot, but they also talked loud, listened to the TV loud etc so I never really thought about.
One night about 1am the guy comes home drunk as hell and is pounding on the door. He is pissed, screaming at her to let him in and literally falling down drunk. I called the police and when they arrived the guy said he wasn't pissed, his girlfriend was just sleeping and can't hear him knocking (he was knocking so loud and screaming so loud he actually woke the deaf girl that lived next to me up). The police used a cell phone and called her and that woke her up and everything seemed fine. They suggested he get a second key made, which he told them he couldn't afford (although he could afford going to the bar to get drunk).
About a week later it happened again. This time I let him use my phone. He called her, she woke up and all was fine. About two weeks later I came home late and found him pounding on the door. I offered to let him use my phone to call and wake her up. The next day I drove him down the street to a hardware store and paid to have a duplicate key made. He was happy I did so.
About a week after this he came home drunk again, used the key I had bought him to get into the house and proceeded to beat the shirt out of her. To this day I still feel a little bit of guilt over that.Comment

You shouldn't feel guilty. You were being a good neighbour/samaritan - trying to help out and do the right thing.
Wasn't your fault the guy was an abusive asshole. It was entirely his fault.Comment

True. When I look back on it I had no way of really knowing. Everything seemed fine and the cops even thought all was good so I just assumed he was an idiot and she was one of those people can can sleep through just about anything, but the sound of the phone woke her.
I guess what was really happening is when he would go drink he would get mean and she would let him pound on the door for a while so he would calm down.
I actually felt sorry for her. She seemed like a nice person who then found herself stuck in a shitty situation.Comment

I've only seen a man beat on a woman one time.
I came out of a bar and saw him holding her by the neck up against the side of a car and was smacking her.
I ran up to him pulled him off her an commenced to beating the fuck out of him leaving him bleeding from his face crawling on his hands and knees into the street trying to get away.
I don't handle assholes that think they gotta put their hands on a woman very well.
No excuses...
