Newsletter advice for the pros :)
Riddle me this my fellow mailers...
I have a list of my customers and newsletter subscribers in the tens of thousands and a few bad "SUBSCRIBERS" who signed up are complaining of my mailings that I get flagged everytime. We are not spammers nor did we harvest these emails. How can I proceed? I do not wish to bail on using my email list but for now I need to. thoughts? suggestions? reality checks? 1) run them anyways (hosting wont like that) 2) bail on the list and run the emails thru a service to capture them back and do my mailings? 3) what do YOU suggest? ![]()

Do you remind them in the email why they are getting it... either as a former member or someone who signed up for newsletters?

Why not send an e-mail out with the sole purpose of explaining what you did here?

I'm guessing it's mainly gmail users, as it's very easy for them to report something as spam rather than unsubscribe. Of course, I am assuming you have a working unsub on your mailer and you act on that within 24 hours, if not automatically. If you have a sender who uses feedback loops, the spam complaints should be removed automatically. Here's a useful check list from mail chimp: Here are a few questions to ask if you?re seeing abuse complaints for your (or your clients?) email campaigns: Surprise factor ? are people surprised to be getting your email for some reason? Did they merely purchase a product from your store, and now suddenly you?re sending them marketing messages without their permission? Did you have some kind of ?drop your business card in the fish bowl? contest (without telling participants you?d be subscribing them to regular emails)? Is your branding consistent in your emails? Can people look at your email, and instantly say, ?Oh yeah, I remember that website where I subscribed?? Is my list 100% permission-based? Or are portions of it from non-permission sources? For example, did you merge a bunch of people from your sales team?s CRM ?prospects? list? Are you sending so infrequently, that people just forgot who you are? Is your from-name descriptive, and is your subject line non-spammy? If not, your email might look like it?s from a stranger. Does your content just plain suck? Is it useful? Easy to read? Did you set the expectation that you?d send useful news, but now all you?re sending is e-coupons and advertisements? Perhaps you need to segment your lists upfront better. Did you purchase a list from some shady operation? Go punch yourself in the gut for being stupid. Then, remove the list immediately. Are your recipients just plain crazy? It?s rare, but it happens. Expect a handful of accidental spam reports. It just goes with the territory (but here are some ways to prevent them). And even more information here http://www.authsmtp.com/faqs/faq-62.html Hope that helps. If you need any more advice, feel free to post here, or email me. |

Thanks for those great tips - we market so many ways here that we just bailed on it a few months but it was always a regular stream of income. Thanks again, perhaps we will take a step back and do focused lists based on source of email so that people better understand where they came from. We did infact merge our list to a master list from a few different sites we run and that definately is a very valid point from your list to why people who click and report.
or maybe phplist just sucks hahaha Quote:

You're welcome. There's certainly a lot to think about.
phplist isn't the greatest, but yes, if you merged lists then that is almost certainly the problem I use interspire now for sending and it's much better than phplist, but I don't think that's the issue here... If you need any help putting together a proper email strategy and getting some tips on copy and design, hit me up. damian AT adultmarketing DOT co DOT uk Have luck |

First rule of mailing is.
Your going to get complaints. Remove them and dont send again. Second rule. Your going to get complaints. Remove them and dont send again. Single Double or Triple opt in is going to get complaints.
