THE AFGHAN CONNECTION

?You can say the Afghan rebels made their money off the sale of opium. There?s no doubt about it. The rebels keep their cause going through the sale of opium.
-DAVID MELOCIK, DEA Congressional Affairs Liaison

During the mid 1970s, the temporary success of some Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) operations in Turkey, Thailand and Mexico reduced the heroin flow into the United States and cut the number of American addicts by more than a half. However, the CIA?s covert warfare operation in Afghanistan then transformed southern Asia from a self-contained opium zone into a major supplier of heroin for the world market.

When President Carter reacted to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 by shipping arms to the mujahedin guerrillas, Dr. David Musto of the White House Strategy Council on Drug Abuse warned: ?We were going into Afghanistan to support the opium growers in their rebellion against the Soviets. Shouldn?t we try to avoid what we had done in Laos? ? Are we erring in befriending these tribes as we did in Laos, when Air America, chartered by the Central Intelligence Agency, helped transport crude opium from certain tribal areas? Shouldn?t we try to pay the growers if they will eradicate their opium production??

Pretty sure that's called making a living. And a damn good one. He makes millions being a "pretty boy, talentless, piece of shit" and probably has given his daughter more opportunities in life than everyone in this thread put together will ever be able to give their kids.

I don't feel sorry for her one bit. Her childhood was AWESOME compared to millions of other people.

I'm having fun with Johnny and you take it as an opportunity to bash me and Americans, again.

I probably shouldn't be surprised.

money is no substitute for an absent father/love. of course i don't know what life was really like for them but its pretty typically of the situation.

That's true...but it's a lot better than being poor and having an "absent parent".

My dad went to work at 6 a.m. every morning. Got home around 8 p.m. in the evening.
I saw him briefly at the supper table on weeknights.

Millions of kids don't even have two parents at home.

My wife's mother was killed when she was 3 years old.

Situations are different for everybody. And yet somehow people seem to make it.

I don't go for that "my mommy and daddy didn't pay me enough attention when I was young" line of thinking.
Once you're an adult...and 19 is an adult (I moved out of my parent's house when I was 16), you have to take responsibility for your own actions.

And if you can't handle getting high...then don't get high. I'm just sayin' I don't feel sorry for her one bit. And I don't "blame" her parents.

For all we know they might have been too strict with her as a child which made her more rebellious. Who knows?
It's just dumb. She had a childhood that any of us would have loved to have had. And she is going to have a life like any of us wish we could have....she's filthy rich. She's famous.

And at the end of the day she doesn't have to worry and stress over paying the bills and what the future may hold.

A lot of people grew up without their parents around and don't have the luxury of being rich and famous.

poor girl, and to get arrested too, as if she didn't learn her lesson by OD'ing and being in the world's press.

fuck we all make mistakes with drugs, I feel sorry for her.

Back when Jerry Garcia was still alive, if the Grateful Dead was touring within 200 miles of your hometown there would suddenly be a lot of good acid everywhere.

Makes sense that the Afghan war would mean more heroin for the U.S.

Has anyone here ever done it? Everything I've read about it says that the feeling of Euphoria is so intense that nothing can match it. (and that's one of the reasons I never even thought about it...sounds like you would get hooked on that feeling even faster than you would get an actual physical addiction)

I was an IV heroin user for about 8 years (off and on). Have you ever taken any kind of opiate/painkillers? It's exactly like that when it comes to the high but when you IV heroin (and if you're getting good heroin) the rush is pretty intense (and it's only a few seconds...literally like maybe 3-4 seconds as it's flooding your receptors that make you feel good). You get really warm, euphoria like cocaine kicks in, and you're body feels amazing...and then the euphoria lasts about 8 or so hours depending on the purity of the dope you're getting.

It's funny how addiction creeps up on you, I started out with it back in my teens and would just snort it every now and then...but then you start doing it a little more and a little more...and next thing you know you're there. I started IVing it maybe 2 years after I started snorting it and it raises it to a whole new level because not only do you love the euphoria from the heroin...but you also gain an addiction to the needle and the rush it brings...and I used to be seriously afraid of needles! My first times IVing I had to have someone else do it for me and I couldn't even watch because I was so afraid of needles.

Anyways, there's a lot of misinformation out there about heroin and the "evils of it." Addiction is addiction no matter what you're using or doing and if you use clean syringes and know your limits, heroin itself is relatively safe...it can just be addicting as hell which can cause serious problems.

For instance:

"Heroin itself is relatively non-toxic (it doesn't destroy skin tissue or other cells in the body as does alcohol and tobacco). Most of the health problems that stem from heroin use are life-style related or linked to the route of administration (injecting drug use for example - through sharing needles or improper use - often leads to various blood-borne diseases or viruses such as HIV or Hepatitis B/C and/or abscess or collapsed veins).

Heroin itself cannot give you spots, make you thin etc. as suggested by previous 'educational' campaigns. Those with the resources to buy their heroin without it impacting on money for food or personal welfare and who are careful about how they administer the drug, can live a generally healthy lifestyle.

Although overdose, (fatal and otherwise) can result from heroin use, it is rare that this is solely the result of heroin use alone. "

Sounds about right. Most people party the hardest in their teens and early 20's. Sewing wild oats and all.

Of course, girls physiologically can't handle the same amount of alcohol or drugs as a man can.

I remember when everyone first started partying on GHB. At the time it was legal and you could buy it at GNC (back in the mid 1990's)

Guys like me who work out would take a tiny capful at night to help the pituitary gland produce natural growth hormone while you sleep...which is what it was made for.

But everybody soon figured out that if you took a pepsi cap from a soda and filled that up with GHB, you got a really pleasant and relaxed high that also was GREAT when having sex (the feeling when having an orgasm was so damn intense).

Next thing you know...girls at strip clubs were OD'ing left and right on the stuff! LOL! None of them that I ever knew actually died from it...but what it would do is "short circuit" their nervous system if they took too much.

So you'd see a girl standing at a table putting her hand on the table, then taking it back. Then doing that one movement over and over and over for 10 minutes. lol

Or worst case scenario...lying on the ground twitching like they had been electrocuted.

Crazy shit.

But girls always seemed to be OD'ing on it while us guys just seemed to be relaxed and feeling great during sex and then getting a good night's sleep. Go figure.
