Lakeside Park (Rush) - and new [PICS]

Spent some time earlier this morning doing some photography down at the Lakeside Park (Port Dalhousie, Ontario) - made famous by Canadian rockers Rush with a song of the same name.

    LAKESIDE PARK
    (Rush)

    Midway hawkers calling
    'Try your luck with me'
    Merry-go-round wheezing
    The same old melody
    A thousand ten cent wonders
    Who could ask for more
    A pocketful of silver
    The key to heaven's door

    Lakeside Park
    Willows in the breeze
    Lakeside Park
    So many memories
    Laughing rides
    Midway lights
    Shining stars on summer nights

    Days of barefoot freedom
    Racing with the waves
    Nights of starlit secrets
    Crackling driftwood flames
    Drinking by the lighthouse
    Smoking on the pier
    Still we saw the magic
    Was fading every year

    Everyone would gather
    On the twenty-fourth of May
    Sitting in the sand
    To watch the fireworks display
    Dancing fires on the beach
    Singing songs together...
    Though it's just a memory
    Some memories last forever

And literally a stone's throw away from Lakeside Park - another point of interest - the Port Mansion Theatre - made infamous by serial killers Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka when it played host to Bernardo's bachelor party (Paul often drank beers on the Mansion patio).

Built in 1862 - the historical Port Mansion's time is up. Surrounded by temporary fencing, it's slated for demolition to make way for a new condominium development.

I hate to see old buildings like that get torn down. Character like that can't be replaced.

Me too - especially this one. We've hoisted more than a few cold brews on the patio of the place over the years. Great pub in the summertime...overlooking the scenery of Lakeside Park.

Local residents fought the good fight to save it - but the condo developers eventually won (money found its way into the right influential pockets).

Hopefully they'll save a bit of the old building and incorporate it somehow into the new project. Keepin' our fingers crossed at least.

A shot from the parking lot of Lakeside Park looking back at the Port Mansion - with the fugly condominium sales centre on the right.

Nice! One of my favorite early Rush songs.

I heard the area is a lot different now than 1976. It used to have a little amusement park, arcade, with fireworks in the summer. Now it's just a small park?

Zoned for condos, I think. Toronto is 100% condo zone. No businesses, no nothing. All condos!

Much different nowadays than when Neil Peart grew up in the area. They still have a (traveling) carnival once a year and fireworks - but it's very small by comparison to the old days. And the historic carousel is still there - a nickel-a-ride - maintained and operated by the City.

But it's all about to change with the new development very soon. Demolition has begun on several of the old buildings nearby.

Moving Pictures - their masterpiece IMO. And Red Barchetta - a classic.

Neil Peart's 'Chromey' DrumKit makes an appearance at Lakeside Park
                                  July 14, 2010

The Chromey, the 1974 chrome Slingerland drum kit that was once owned and played by RUSH drummer and former Port Dalhousie resident Neil Peart, will be available for the public to view at Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie on July 22, from 1-11 p.m., as well as July 24, from noon to 10 p.m. Fans can come to the park that was immortalized in a Rush song of the same name and have their photos taken and even play the drums to raise money for the Friends Of The Carousel.

The kit was initially purchased by Peart in 1974 for a US-Canada tour. Aside from All the World's A Stage (where the drums also appear on the album cover), the Chromey was used in the recording of three other Rush albums: Fly By Night, Caress Of Steel and 2112 and went on five consecutive North American tours between 1974-77.

The kit was retired in 1977, and remained in storage for a decade until it became a prize in the July 1987 issue of Modern Drummer magazine, to be awarded to the person who performed the best drum solo, as judged by Peart himself. Mark Feldman, of New York City, was declared the winner and he kept them in storage for 22 years, until 2009.

I guess the new modern garbage is more pleasing to the eye, although new buildings will fall apart long before an older one such as this one.....same with automobiles ;)

I hate seeing the old places demolished, too...but this area had its problems over the years. The nightclub next door called "My Cottage" had a liquor license for 1,400 people. And on weekends it was always invaded by the university kids - standing room only with a hundred more lined up outside to get in.

Basically the surrounding residential neighbourhood had become a big urinal and vomitorium... homeowners were getting rather fed-up with the drinking, noise, vandalism, violence, etc.

I worked the area on weekends and saw much of it firsthand. It was a cesspool.
