A few days before the storm hits I stock up on food, fill my cars up with gas, fill the water bladder and put up all the storm shutters.

I bought a house close enough to the beach to that I'm five minutes but far enough away and on high enough ground that my house won't flood in a storm surge.

After the storm hits I'm on generator power with plenty of food, watching TV via DirecTV, taking hot showers, working using either my normal internet connection or using cell phone tethering, cooking and pretty much going about live as normal.

The biggest issue is keeping all the idiots away that didn't prepare for the storm and now want to stay with me using up my supplies.
This is what we have learned by living in FL and going through some of the worst storms in history. Andrew was beyond devastating.

I am sure some of the people in NY and the upper stats have a reason to be worried and bitching about food, water etc. Because they lost almost everything. But a lot of others only lost power with a broken window or three. they are the ones that are bitching for no reason, because they are lazy and stupid.

I resist the term "prepper" because it's made-for-TV. Being prepared for a storm doesn't mean you are someone sitting on a pile of 5 gallon buckets full of food on guard with a shotgun. (but that's how "preppers" sounds). And if you're not a "prepper" it doesn't mean you're sitting there whining like a baby for government to save you.

It seems the discussion just naturally goes to two extremes ignoring the vast gulf of common sense in between. Just use your head and help someone if you can and ask for help if you need it.

Actually Howard, I was shocked after Wilma in S. Florida how many people couldn't care for themselves with the power out for many days. I remember one instance, we made big pot of tuna casserole on the bar-b-que pit like the 3rd day in and invited all the neighbors to come enjoy. We had one family that you would have thought we walked on water, they were shocked that we made that without power, as they had been eating peanut butter and poptarts for three days and these were native Floridians.

There is a bunch of old people. We pay taxes all our lives and emergencies happen and they expect there gov to be there for them. WHat's wrong with that? Were all products of our of where we live. In fl everyone has storm shutters and is prepared. We don't get these type of storms up here. People should have a bit more empathy rather than hating on everyone. If it was you or your family you wouldn't be laughing!!
I don't think anyone is hating on the people affected. I think people's comments are more directed at the lack of common sense displayed by people seemingly in the first world. I think in the original article, people are upset that there are long lines for gas, and food, so these aren't necessarily the people that are destitute with their homes washed away, more than likely, these are just people that could be comfortable, riding out this event in their homes if they had just taken a bit of precaution. This leaves emergency resources for the people that really need it. Those that did lose their homes, and are worse off than most.

The north east of the U.S may not get that many hurricanes, but they do get snow storms and ice storms, and we are constantly told by gov't officials to have at LEAST 3 days worth of emergency supplies on hand. Hurricane Sandy was not exactly an event that came out of nowhere, people had almost a week or more to prepare, and they did tout this one as being extreme. Now we may suffer a bit from "the boy who cried wolf" syndrome, as meteorologists never seem to be able to get it right. But its always better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I live quite far in-land, in rural Ontario. We only got high winds from this storm, but we still took precautions, making sure we had extra water on hand for our livestock, and making sure that we had food in stock, and we were only without power for 12 hours or so. We've gone days without power during snowstorms and ice storms but we always manage.

The thread title isn't about those who lost everything but the people crying about not having electric for a few days.

Most hurricanes I've lost electric for about a week and after Wilma I lost electric for three weeks and lost water for four days. All of this was just an inconvenience because I was prepared with my own water and a fridg and cabinets stocked with plenty of food plus a generator with enough fuel for two weeks. Having to drive about 50 miles to get more gas after a few weeks was about as bad as it got.

The woman on TV yesterday screaming because she didn't have electric for three days was like a spoiled baby crying.

my brother rode north west 180 miles during the LAST hurricane. That area he went to got hit the hardest in the regions history. He was stuck upstate NY for a week because the entire town was pretty much under water and undrivable.

There really isnt a safe place to go on a tank of gas. If you end up picking the wrong direction- it might take quite awhile to get back...ie: losing your car.

Tuna lasts for more than a year, same with caned beans and corn. Soup is always handy to have. Canned fruit while heavy in sugar also lasts more than a year. Granted it's not a fresh diet but it's FOOD in case of an emergency. It means you can take care of yourself.

Every year when there are holiday food drives I rotate out some old and buy new. A hundred bucks goes a long way.
