Anyone here got some first hand Sandy stories?

Just out of pure interest. Any of our fellow GFY posters affected directly by hurricane Sandy?

Pretty dramatic scenes on TV.

Nothing but strong wind in the Bronx. Was fun. Sucks for Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island and NJ though. The whole Farrock/Breezy Point is fucked over, like a Detroit by the sea now.

I think some people are probably still without power who's stories can't be told yet.

Mostly my BMW was covered in leaves. Lost internet for a few hours, but was late overnight so had a noon start .... All I got here in the philly suburbs was some wind blown lighter rains, a lot of wind and not really much else.

In my immediate area, it is as if nothing happened at all.

My NJ/NY friends that are 20 miles north of philly: Living in the dark, no cell phones, no gas for 30+ miles around. Things are really bad for these folks.

If you think what he said is true, you should be able to answer the same question:

In what way is it "meaningless"?

one of my partners from Loki Land lives in RI, his area was hit pretty hard but his house itself made it through, he was without power, phones, and net for about 2 days.

Here in Northern Michigan we got wind that took out about 4 trees so far, they say one more day of wind to deal with for us but the projections of wind gusts is a lot less now then what they said they other day,

NOTHING near as bad as NY, NJ, etc etc but I'm still amazed that Michigan, Ohio, Chicago and Wiss got as much as we did from the same storm (30 foot waves on Lake Michigan)

Actually you're right, it isn't entirely meaningless. But in the context of that graph it is.

It's a stat, which doesn't take into account any of the environmental factors.

Wow didn't know it went as far west as that, but the satelite image showed how immense the system was. well over 1000km wide or something like that?

Well the point, or meaning, is that the relative number of deaths and devastation is not mirrored in the media coverage, or general interest, which is virtually all focused on the US. It's likely the number of deaths in Haiti alone will eclipse those in the US.

The population of the island listed is MUCH smaller than the US and canada, so ANY deaths will show as a higher percentage. Also they are MUCH smaller relative to the size of the storm than the US and Canada. The affect of a hurricane on a tiny series of islands is always greater than on a massive continent. If the storm that hit NYC was 50 times the size the the continent of North America, (like it was 50 times the size of Haiti), then the death tolll would be similar or even greater, percentage-wise. It's comparing apples to oranges.

I wasn't trying to offend you actually.... I thought you had posted it as a joke, and I was laughing with you.

If that is what you were trying to point at.... Here is an even better one. I bet you didn't even know about the other storm gong on simultaniously on the other side of the world....

Great, a terrible storm wreaks havoc on thousands of people for thousands of miles and we humans break it down to a debate over which country had the most deaths and how the US is a media hog.

Unreal.

Anyone need some red cross relief? Maybe it's time to start thinking about donating.

got some friends in New Jersey that had a tree blown down, although it happened 3 hours after it was downgraded to just a storm. They wanted to go out, but apparently the media said it was all very serious so they stayed in and watched tv
