If not for the sacrifices of other countries, like the United States, Great Britain, Canada they'd still be working for the Third Reich.
And while we're talking about the Third Reich, according to Hitler no occupied people ever worked harder for him than the French.

The French populace voted in huge numbers for an out and out racist in their last election, a person with those views wouldn't pull 1% of the vote in the United States.
