I mean like the 40 gig ones from Maxtor or Western Digital. I see one on Compusa.com that's 100 gig's for $232 and that sounds awesome too, but I dont know how good these things are. |

Back when USB was still relatively new, I bought a small (medium, for the time) extrnal drive from VST. I was very happy with it, and I believe they still exist as a brand under a larger company. Personally, I would be using FireWire at this point, though.

Oh... check out this site...
http://www.dealmac.com -- they have a PC sister site, with some of the same deals. They have a good deal on an external drive almost every day. Better than you will find yourself.

Actually I was talking about the portable media, it's more for storage than anything else, so you can take your files without taking your computer when you go places that have a computer you can borrow...

I got a 120GB Western Digital USB drive a month ago, its very cool. Been in Vegas for the last week and it allowed me to take all my work, content library, MP3's, DivX movies & shit with me.
Also great for backups. |

How sturdy are they? The thought of having my hard drive bumping around in a suitcase doesn't sit well with me.

I have a 60 gig from Acomdata ( 5200 rpm).
Then I bought USB 2.0 / firewire enclosure for 37.00 US, add a 100 gig drive. This is really worth it. Also used another enclosure for a DVD writer. It's the way to go: external.... |

Just bought a Maxtor 60gig last week because I work on a laptop and thrash it in the process. Works great for storage...
Connects through High Speed USB or FireWire. It rocks. |

I use the little external boxes that hold laptop drives, very small and portable. Using ghost (or equivalent) you can keep one backup on site and one off. But even the 3.5" (desktop) hd boxes are not very big and can do the same thing cheaper.
Make sure you use usb2 though, regular usb is just too slow. |
