One aspect I've always liked of your photography is you expose properly for the entire scene, without blowing out the highlights of the background sky. A lot of photographers in our biz would simply over-expose the sky and miss the opportunity to capture it properly.
Makes a big difference, IMO.
Nice work as always. Jealous of the exotic locale.
Well yes I am very conscious of trying to get the exposure correct for all parts of the picture, although I cannot say that I was as successful with it here as I would have liked. It is a bit more challenging when you are shooting straight into the sun as I was here. The clouds and sea are still blown out in the direction of the sun. I could have brought more detail into the clouds by shortening the exposure but then I'd lose detail in the water and the distant land would have just been a completely black silhouette. You have to sacrifice one or the other. If I was shooting on a MUCH smaller scale scene I would have lit the background with flashes and got everything exposed right.
Here's what I like about shooting in New Zealand. You can find tons of amazing locations in some of the world's most beautiful scenery and there's not a sole around. We took a 30 minute hike to get to this spot and didn't see a single other person all day. The whole country has less than 4 million people and apparently it's just too far away for the hoards of tourists to go there. After having done the typical tourist destinations in Europe and drowning in seas of people all herded around like animals in a pen it sure is refreshing to get away from the madness and see a more beautiful and pristine land. This is really one of the world's best kept secrets and one of the last unspoiled places on earth.
