What will Visa do in the next 12 months?

What if they decide to pull the plug on adult sites? The large majority of their billing is not done online, and is not adult oriented.. What are your thoughts?

Cheers,
Matt

I think the chances of visa pulling the plug on adult sites is slim if that. This will never happen, more new rules and restrictions maybe.

do they make decisions in a vaccum, as in are there public hearings or consultations amongst its member banks, users, investors or the various Visa International regional affilaites...that take place before major decisions are enacted?. If so, what is on the table for discussion this year?

I'm not sure, though I would think that is how they'd do decision making.

And I think greentea is right that there will be more restrictions, or maybe even they will want a higher %, because they know they could get it... though that's a bit of unfair business practices..

Cheers,
Matt

I don't think they make decisions in a true vaccum, but these are essentially bankers and finance guys. They don't really trust public relations people or pollsters...the folks who could tell them what the public is thinking. So, in a manner of speaking, they make decision is a sort of "cone of ignorance."

Believe me, I've dealt with these people. They tend to talk with and listen to others who look, feel and think exactly as they do. Add to that the notion that some wacko right wing or religious group starts a boycott of VISA...which would not work but is brings enormous pressure.

Plus, frankly, in this business we are not very good at flogging the PR dog ourselves. I mean think of it, online porn is what, an 80 billion dollar business or something? Whatever the numbers, this isn't three guys in long coats looking at grainy black and white photos of a fat whore anymore. This is an industry that caters to literally tens of millions of people in just the US...and yet, everyone (politicians, moralists, etc.) act as if no one really buys this material...it is merely out there.

Damn, soap box. Sorry. But, you get my point. No, I doubt VISA would try to actually stop adult sites. But I do believe they are going to make it harder and harder to run a business in the adult community.

Read the full article. Here is the first paragraph:

"European consumers are taking their love of shopping online, said credit card giant Visa, which says its cardholders did more than twice as much business through the internet at the end of 2002 than a year before. "

this is from a survey released yesterday:

Online shopping has increased dramatically, according to the study. Nearly two-thirds of 2,900 Web surfers Ipsos-Reid surveyed said that they had at some point in time bought something online, up from 36 percent of those surveyed in 2000. The biggest markets for online shopping, according to the 12-country study, are in the United States and the United Kingdom, where 77 percent and 68 percent of Web users surveyed, respectively, have made purchases online.

That surge comes too late, however, for many now defunct Internet start-ups that tried to capitalize on people's urge to spend online.

"In spite of the dot-com meltdown, the Internet is still going strong and is advancing steadily," said Gus Schattenberg, vice president of global research at Ipsos-Reid. "There is no sign that we've reached any kind of a plateau, and the Internet is becoming a more important part of everyone's daily life."

That would be more than just a slight exaggeration, I think.

There are a lot of things in the works so that webmasters will soon be able to tell VISA to KMA.

What goes around comes around.

You have a lot of Chess players in here that are moves ahead of them. Don't worry, it'll be ok.

Next thing I see Visa not allowing are the following two:

1) No Automatic rebills
2) No Crossbills

More to worry about with Mastercard than Visa even though Visa has a larger market share.
