I guess I have had different experience. I wouldn't say I am well traveled, but I have been to several countries and for the most part the people I have met that were outside the tourist industry knew next to nothing about the US aside from famous people and famous cities.Comment

I totally understand where you are coming from ... but my own experience comes from two approaches: meeting yearly with an average of 10,000 + (semi) professionals globally, and also crossing paths with the "average joe/jane" back in the States. Sadly way too many, cannot identify their own State on a map, if it wasn't already labeled for them.
