Tip: How Long Have You Had The Same Broadband Provider Router?

I got FIOS just as soon as it was available in my area. I think it was 2004 or 2005. Going from a model to DSL was sweet. Going from DSL to FIOS was insane!

My GF bought a new printer with the WPS protocol for setting it up easy over wifi and my router didn't have that button. So I called up Verizon and basically told them to give me their most current router since mine was from several contract extensions ago.

The new router came in the mail yesterday. It has two antennas instead of one. It supports several things the old one didn't.

Speed wise this new router seems to handle high traffic loads with several different systems in the house a lot better. On the opposite side of the house from the router my old signal was very poor. Zero to one bar when lucky. Downloading a 300MB file would take about 20 to 40 minutes. Now it takes 4 minutes and the signal strength is 4 bars.

GF's printer set itself up with the WPS protocol. Great experience.

Highly recommend you ask your provider for an equipment upgrade if your equipment is four years old or older.

In order to provide fast speeds a router needs to have a fast CPU. That choppy video you experience on wifi might have more to do with your router than the "connection" speed and/or quality of your connection to the internet.

Did they send you an 802.11ac gigabit router?

i suspect in the uk very few bother to buy them.

In the UK, I had a router from 2007... Got them to send me an updated version, which they did...

It was utter shite... Loads of little niggles, ie Everytime the microwave was used the signal would drop out... Silly shit like that...

I am currently using the old router again...

But then thats the UK. Miles behind everywhere else

How can you afford to have neighbours that can afford to have wifi?

Yes. I signed up for a broadband connection, being careful to use the same provider as my neighbour...

Once it had been installed, I cancelled payment ! They in return cancelled service, but that was cool... I was never gonna use it anyway.

They have taken me to court for contract fees, on a long drawn out basis, but as I basically have NOTHING (Not even a pot to piss in...) they are on a road to nowhere...

However, because (although I DONT PAY) I am still in the system (Due to the court process)

Therefore, because the two systems dont 'talk' to each other (ie 1 The fact I AM a customer & 2 the fact I DONT Pay....) it means that they sed me out a FREE shitty upgrade, with which I can use to seal my neighbours Wi-Fi...

Anyway, as they say... Its your stage now

Most of the equipment around here is from the 90's and its the best they have from the phone company. And they stuck with using the worst of the 2 routers they had because they were cheaper to buy. Regardless of the fact that the life of them was about 9 months.

The other connection we have is fiber optic and its really good. Router is more powerful etc but still I am sure, an older model.

I'm on the other side of the house on a laptop with a shitty wifi from when it was built. 2008?

When I am in the backyard or in the office it is more like almost instant.

Point was the upgrade in signal strength from old router to the new one. I was about to shell out $59 for a repeater, but then my GF bought the printer and I decided to see if a new router would do better on both counts.

Why am I even explaining myself to you?

From some time around 2001 to 2004 or so I used the neighbors wifi... that was back when everybody was peace and love and bullshit.

I had mine for a couple of years but had to replace it when I upgraded my package. At my old place though, I used the same router for like 7 years.
