PlugRush starts campaign against Adblockers: RemoveAdblock.com

PlugRush, the most innovative traffic broker in the adult industry is starting a campaign to educate Internet users about the consequences of using Adblock browser extensions.

Adblock is increasingly becoming a problem for websites that rely on advertisement as their main source of revenue. Users with Adblock installed in their browsers are leeching bandwidth and server resources, and are a big problem for sites that have ad revenue as it's primary revenue stream. For the average website around 5-10% of the users have Adblock installed. On a global scale more than 200 million users have enabled the popular browser extension. For many websites it can become a substantial cost to allow these users to have access to the site without contributing anything at all to increased revenue. Many websites is forced to use more intrusive methods to generate income.

In an effort to combat the rising amount of Internet users who install Adblock, the team at PlugRush has developed some tools to both educate and monetize these users. A campaign has been started at removeadblock.com to inform users and get them to disable or remove their Adblock extensions. Publishers can install a small script on their website that detects if a user have Adblock installed and will show them a warning, prevent access to the content, and give them instructions on how to turn Adblock off. Our goal is to educate users about the negative consequences Adblock has on a free Internet, and hopefully make an impact on the amount of users who install the extension in their favorite browser.

"I was shocked when I saw the statistics on how many of our users are blocking all our ads." said PlugRush's managing partner Thomas Pedersen. "It's growing rapidly and it is killing the free Internet as we know it. There has to be some way to change this. That's when we came up with the Remove Adblock campaign."

In addition to educating the users, PlugRush publishers can make money on these users by choosing to redirect Adblock users to paid campaigns if the users still decides to not disable or remove their Adblock extensions. Just because these users don't see ads, doesn't mean you can't sell them things. If they don't want to see ads, we have to redirect them directly to the products we want to sell. Test show that this type of users are no different than other users when it comes to sales ratios.

This opens up a completely new audience for Advertisers. They can reach a new untapped market who until now, has been unavailable to them. By creating optimized campaigns targeting Adblock users, some of our early beta test advertisers are even seeing higher conversion ratios than with other types of traffic.

Throw some social networking buttons on there so it can be shared, however I have one request....

I understand you having "Powered by Plugrush" on the site... fuck, it's a link. But, I wouldn't LIKE it (socially) because if somebody on my Facebook or Twitter visits, they will see what Plugrush is all about. I absolutely fucking LOVE Plugrush, I'm just a bit apprehensive about sharing all of that "adult" shit with Facebook friends, family, etc.

I suggest making it an entity all it's own and then I think it would nail down the entirety of all online marketing affiliates; both mainstream and adult. We all have the same views regarding adblockers. We all lose.

That's just my

Yeah, I can see your point. If we want to market this towards mainstream as well, it's probably not a good idea with a link to an adult ad network.. Removing it now. Will also add the social buttons. good suggestion

Good idea, particularly the auto-detection so that only the right people are targeted.

I remember several years ago there was a similar movement, from memory it was to detect (and try to educate) people who had Zango installed.

as a publisher: can youtell us if i have plugrush ads on my site (for example gallery plugs) then someone has adblock installed. After they get the pop up informing them about adblock they get redirected to where? If they get redirected to one of advertisers then this might earn us some more money but wont this alienate our regular visitors? If they cant visit the site anymore and are not willing to turn off adblock we loose them..

You can specify a couple of things when setting up the adblock detector.

You can specify if you want to redirect them to a paid campaign to make money, or redirect them to removeadblock.com and educate them, and tell them to disable Adblock for your site. Or you can select to redirect them once to removeadblock, and then to paid campaigns if they refuse to turn it off.

You can also specify if you want them to be redirected every time on all pageviews, or if you want it to happen only once per 24 hours for each user..

When your page is finished loading, a warning message gets displayed on top, and they then get redirected to either removeadblock.com or a paid campaign, depending on your settings..

thank you, this sounds good, will try it . These redirects count and are priced as what? Mobile redirects? Or paid like if someone clicks on gallery plug for example?

Can we put our original website in "Alternative URL" (if we have redirection only once per 24h for example) or would that create endless redirection?

If you have it at only once per 24 hours, it should be fine to use your own site as redirect url.

It's priced as it's own traffic category which will adjust based on conversions and bids from advertisers. So far it seems to be paying a bit more than popunders, and a bit lower than clicked plugs. between $3-4 CPM at the moment on average.

Yeah, that is a concern, but it's only targeted towards those who have it installed, and only those get redirected..

I don't think the users that have adblock installed it for the fun of it. They installed it because they were annoyed by aggressive ads popping everywhere
and I dont think they will disable it because someone wants to make some coin.

Anyway,to combat adblocker best is to use custom size of iframe/banner so it doesn't get autoblocked.

Yes, that is one option, but if you do that you can not use any ad networks for any ad space on your website. That doesn't work well for all sites.

Adblock is increasingly becoming a problem for websites that rely on advertisement as their main source of revenue.

There's your problem isn't it? That needs to be fixed by changing the business model, not telling the demographic to change. This is like saying "hey guys, we need you to start buying VHS tapes because some porn makers still rely on VHS tape sales as their main source of revenue. We know dvd's or heck, downloading videos is cheaper and easier but we are dying out here, we need you guys to change and here we made a VHS tape to educate you guys why you should stop watching dvd's and internet and go back to VHS tapes".

Will this ruin the bounce rate, hence reduce overall SEO traffic?

If ads weren't so fucking in-your-face nowadays, less people would use adblock. I started usign it because the local news sites (ie onet.pl) would run nearly fullscreen video ads or HUGE fullscreen flash ads that you'd have to look real hard to find the close button.
All for products I'm not interested in.

I do not mind losing a few dollars knowing that sites like PornHub or XVIDEOS lose thousands a day!

Hopefully this program will be improved to avoid detection!
