For some sponsors it's a cruel joke played in the unsuspecting webmasters where you see signups tallied and you get to wait a whole three days before you find out you have only made $2.47 since the signups cancelled. All the while the sponsor has kept the exit traffic and emails from all the surfers you hav sent. But you keep sending traffic in hopes that one of those $2.47 surfers will convert to a full monthly! Muahahahaa

Revenue sharing. For example, if sponsor offers 60% revshare, it means, that you'll get 60% of money he made from your traffic.
ANother example: revsharehosting.com offers free bannerless hosting, but you must signup thru them with sponsors. You'll get 75% of what sponsor pays & they'll get 25%.

The bonus of revshare is that as long as you choose a good site to promote, you can often make more than the typical $35 that most pay per signup sponsors pay.

The main bonus of revshare is that it tends to be far more honest

Many programs offer $35 per signup, or more, to attract affiliates. The problem is, it's a bitch to actually make any money if you are paying that much. So the worst ones end up shaving, and many of the rest have to include all kinds of tricks to make a buck.

On the other hand, a nice simple revshare just pays as the money comes in. The overall pay can be as good, or better than per-signup, but you don't have to worry as much about cheating. Especially with sponsors who use biller-based tracking systems, since they have no way to shave even if they wanted to.

Revshare is also nice, in that you can keep making residual money long after the initial traffic. You make a percentage of all the rebills, so your checks get bigger every month.

It also works well with Amateur stuff. Since most amateurs dont have the cash to offer per sign up stuff, and because we tend to retain more, you can make more money.
