It's all relative isn't it? alpha-male of a bunch of navy seals, alpha-male of a bunch of cam customers, alpha-male of a bunch of mountain gorillas. alpha-male of a bunch of Olympic gold-medal winners. it's all the same in terms of behavior with one rising above the pack.

I wonder if they all get the same increased level of testosterone regardless of the context?

I agree; but I would say tipping cam site it is now mainstream and "regular", while private only ones are outdated... even streamate home page is full of those "gold shows" now, and every new launched cam site is an mfc clone somewhat.
This would mean cam sites are going to be virtual strip clubs mainly, where (not often) a customer can hire a stripper "after the work hours" for a "private" too.
