This would be dead easy to test, so I presume they have done so and decided it didn't work.
Quite a few new cam sites I've seen recently have strict time limits on free chat, and generally these are small and failing sites. Maybe it isn't a cause-effect correlation, but for one thing I can say the strict time limits make it very painful doing reviews. It annoys me enormously and ensures I won't return to that site, hard to think it will encourage surfers to join.Comment

If you won't return to a site because they have a timeout or popup (which, without checking, I'm pretty sure most do) then you wouldn't sign up anyway. And people who won't sign up anyway don't matter.Comment

There is a class people who you can call "would signup if they were sufficiently motivated", those ones are worth catering for.
One way to be motivated is to get interested in, or feel some association with, a site or more likely a particular model. And that takes time, more than two minutes for sure, for some people it might take months.
These are strategies not to be discussed, but to be tested with real traffic. And I presume that is being done.Comment

Maybe tipping sites are different; I was thinking more of the traditional kind. I still think some kind of reminder or incentive to sign up is good though. Popups and timeouts are annoying but I think they work, for people who would sign up anyway.
From affiliates POV, it's better to have such people 'motivated' to sign up ASAP, rather than 6 months down the line of forming a relationship with a model.Comment

Yes every pay user it started as freeloader the first day, but most of the models do not understand it even if you tell them 100 times and write it in her chat page.
I run cam sites since many years and I can see people who keep freeloader for months before to start buy. What it matters the guys are lurking for free in YOUR cam site instead of else one, and then when someone will decide to pay anything, this will be in YOUR cam site instead of somewhere else.
MFC limits nothing so people lurk there and if finally anyone pay something it does in MFC. So Chaturbate does well to not limit anything and have no limits or nags on tubecamgirl.com too.
About the success of a cam site that's not just how you make the "please register to continue" alerts, it is a little more complicated
