                                  McDonald's and the Vatican probably have the most prime real estate. But McDonald's is mostly franchises, so unless the buildings are corporate owned, they're not really in the same league as the Vatican.

                                                              McDonalds franchises out a good chunk of the business, so no real estate there.

                                                              If the had any sizeable real estate, it would have to be on the balance sheet. Many large corporations own zero real estate. They would rather sell off the asset and lease back. Gives them free cash to use for business expansion. I worked for a major movie theatre company, not only did they lease every theatre but also the home office. Also when a business wants to close a location, they may have to wait forever to find a buyer. With a lease, they just walk away, usually paying an early out fee.

                                                                              A good rule of thumb is that if you see a McD's being built in the middle of nowhere; buying land as close as possible is a good idea.

                                                                                  The writers of Fast Food Nation probably meant the value of all the McDonalds real estate COULD be their biggest asset. But MD's owns NO real estate and many places the franchisee doesn't own the real estate. Any MD's on the ground of a shopping mall just a pad lease or inside lease.

                                                                                              Real estates may be owned by something like McDonald's Real Estate Inc. or different name.

                                                                                                          No one said they owned EVERY property where a restaurant exists today. It's a well known fact that McDonalds sold hamburgers to pay for the real estate and are one of the largest property owners in the world. Their business for the first 4 or so decades was buying real estate.... not selling food.
