    if you get lots of hits will it crash a wp site?

    and what is the best way to stop this?

                                                          It also depends what you're running on your wp site. Some plugins don't play nice on a shared server. Especially some importers. Try different ones but check your server load as each one is running. If you can keep your back-end resources down, your traffic should be fine.
