amazon now charge sales tax

doing my usual shopping with free prime shipping i was astounded to see i was being charged sales tax.
one of the advantages of buying amazon has for me been no sales tax.
being in California, i know there is a place for those purchases on my state tax return but still..
i wonder how much business amazon will loose on this.
i will definitively look at other options now, perhaps ebay again..

is it just California or are people from all 50 states being charged sales tax now from Amazon?

it was a huge advantage online retailers had and there has been huge political pressure from brick and mortar retailers to do something about the problem.

by law you are supposed to pay YOUR state sales tax on all items purchased outside your state.

so if you buy something online with no tax, you are supposed to then include that with your tax returns, but no one gives a fuck so no one does.

therefore, California decided to kick everyone in the balls and make it mandatory for buying online

How does that work for states that don't have state income tax returns?

what happens if you buy from a state that doesn't have sales tax requirement at amazon, and send it as a gift to a person in a state that does charge it?

Stealing money is legitimate if you call it a "tax" and the victim of theft is now the freeloader.

How Orwellian.

i run a S corp in California, pay myself a salary.
First i pay tax as an employee, then i pay tax as an employee...go figure.
Then I pay franchise state taxes.
California is not exactly freeloader friendly.

it is charged if the place you send the gift to is located in one of the states mentioned.

That is odd as I am in Texas and have never been charged sales tax on any amazon purchase. Any idea how they are getting around it?

Not only Amazon, but everyone does this... it has always been this way... ordering from the Internet is the same as mail order.
