One of my monitors quit working
...yesterday. It was about fifteen years old. Is it unusual for a monitor to last that long?

The thing is the extra power consumption on it is probably enough that in a couple years of using it you could have bought a brand new LCD for less. Those old CRTs used a lot of power.
