I love the gun nuts who say "Well, if there was someone in the theatre it would have ended different". No, not really. Lots of people would have died. Anyone who thinks the average armed civilian is going go from eating popcorn to taking on an unknown amount of shooters in a dark movie watches WAY too much fucking TV>
Personal weapons are no guarantee against any and all crime and they sure as hell don't work so well in movie theaters in the face of tear gas firing, armor wearing, psychos with automatic weapons.

But they do come in quite handy when local punks seek to violate your personal castle rights.

As has happened to two others on my street.

Never been there myself, but I'd rather like to keep it that way

Exactly. Imagine if there was four armed civilians in the movies when that nut went off. Chances are we would have a lot more dead - they would be shooting at each other without knowing who started shooting in the first place.

I don't think so. Unless you carry your weapon with you 24/7 in your house AND you'll be instantly prepared to use it, your out of luck. If you four people bust down your door, even if your armed... The odds of you taking out all four in the first ten seconds is about one in one hundred. You aren't James Bond.

Police would stop carrying guns if they were as ineffective as you claim. Nobody is saying that having a gun means you're 100% protected. That is a ridiculous statement. Having a gun will not prevent some nut from sneaking up from behind and popping you in the head. Yes, that is true.

However, in other situations having one will give you a better chance against an attacker than mere fisticuffs alone. I think the average cop would agree with that, otherwise they would proceed to hand over their useless firearms.

So if a gun doesn't protect you - and in this case a well trained and armed police officer was shot and killed - why is there is a need for us to carry guns to protect ourselves?

Our need to protect ourselves just arms the nut jobs.

Can someone point out where any of the people being shot at, had guns to defend themselves? Maybe is should be mandatory for everyone in the US to carry a gun. Well that will be the argument put forward by the pro gun brigade.

Why do people that are not from the USA so critical of US gun laws?

If Americans are critical they have that right but what difference are US Gun Laws in Canada or the Czech Republic for example?

Nobody is going to say that they plan to shoot up their workplace or a movie theater when they fill in the background check form.

They say we require a background check, but all that really includes is checking to see if they have ever been convicted of a violent crime. Shouldn't they at least call his doctor and his employer to see if there are any problems we should be aware of?

I'm just saying that we the public insist on having the right to carry firearms to protect ourselves when the truth about such situations is it's over before anyone has the time to react. We want to protect ourselves, rarely do so, and in the mean time we demand more firearms which end up in the hands of criminals and nut jobs.
