techies: why do I need a video card, integrated kicks ass lol

I upgraded all our systems here at the office with i7s (2nd gen), 16 gig memory, 256mb SSDs and 2tb drives x2. I saved some coin and didn't bother adding in video cards as all we do is run video editing, encoding etc, msn, icq, and lots of google chrome browsers. it seems our systems rock the house and do not even need a tricked out video card.

SERIOUS, to all the techies, why should I get all of us video cards - will it help us run our business faster? Thanks for helpin'

Sounds like you don't need one. Powerful video cards are mostly for games, although some programs can use them to increase performance such as adobe photoshop, autocad (pro video cards), etc. There are some programs that can use video cards to encode video faster than cpus but last I checked the quality was better when using the cpu instead, I haven't looked in a long time though.

One possible issue with onboard video is that it often shares system RAM, which means that video is nabbing millions of memory cycles every second from the CPU. A video card has dedicated RAM.

Buy a cheap $30 card and run some encoding benchmarks with and without it, see what happens...

Gcards are for gaming and video. Photoshop can be fine without but not if youre a stickler for pixels.

No, it won't help your business run faster but it will help you kill some noobs in your favorite games!

They're just for games, autocad etc, or anything else that can access the power of the GPU's. Also some now support 4K I believe, which gives you 4 x 1920x1080 panels if I'm not mistaken off of one card (and support for future 4K monitors)

the reason you need a video card is if you are editing and rendering video (in our biz anyway)

The computer I'm typing on right now is a I7 x980 cpu with 24 gigs of RAM
It's as fast and as powerful as anything...
BUT thanks to my NVidia Quadro FX 4800 video card I can render h264 vids that would take hours in a matter of minutes.

Why? Because of the "CUDA" technology that uses the video card's GPU processor to render with Adobe CS6 Premieres Mercury engine.

It not only renders vid a LOT faster, but it does the job a lot better too.

Doesn't matter how much CPU and RAM you have...IF you have Adobe Premiere and a CUDA technology NVidia card, you will blow away your current output of production.

He has to be trolling. He edits and renders video and thinks integrated is ok?

Lol.

Applications that uses CUDA are kickass.

Btw Robbie, you have a great video card. Amateurcanada, you should consider buying one of Quadro FX series video cards.

No doubt ;) but when you are running rough encodes in xilisoft or bulk processing ffmpeg then it doesn't seem to make a difference on which card you use.

I did try an average video card and it was slower in benchmark in windows compared to integrated. I didn't know that CUDA and Premieres video encoded uses the vidcard, now thats great news - thanks for the tip, for that computer ill get a tricked out card.
