What you are referring to is the battle at Dien Bien Phu where the Viet Minh attacked the French from the hillside. This eventually led to the French signing a deal to remove troops from all of French Indo China.
there is no "official" start date to the american involvement in Vietnam, because war was never declared. It was considered a police action.
I could talk about this all night but it gets pretty boring. The French asked for help from their allies "USA", but officially the US got involved in 1961 when Ho Chi Minh decided that he wanted control of the entire country and not just North Vietnam at the 17th parallel.
