What do you use Dropbox, Google Drive for?

What kind of stuff do you keep in there?

So far I'm using them mostly for temporary storage. Not sure if I want to leave anything there long-term.

A friend of mine dumps his CCTV camera (all 6 of them) footage on Google Drive for some reason he's not telling me.

It seems like only yesterday we were all worried about keeping hackers out of our files. Now people actually upload their personal files to the internet?

Seems crazy to me. I wouldn't put a damn thing up on a server that wasn't mine. And even then I wouldn't put my most personal stuff up there.

I've heard radio commercials for "cloud storage" pitching it to small businesses to back up their entire business. That's just insane.

IF I were to ever use it...it would be for bullshit like backing up my music or stupid pictures. Nothing important. I definitely wouldn't back up anything business related there.

You can buy a fucking 2 TB drive at Best Buy for a $150 and keep your shit without worrying about some hacker and/or unscrupulous person at the company you are doing online storage with getting into your stuff.

There's this thing called encryption. TrueCrypt and Dropbox work nicely together.

I shoot a lot for a very large motorcycle/car manufacturer and they use drop box to send me logos, music, graphics etc to put in the stuff I shoot for them. I also use it to send them the rough edits and final cuts and such

You don't want TrueCrypt container encryption in the cloud. BoxCryptor will encrypt on a per file basis, so only that one changed file is re-synced.

Google: "Boxcryptor"

That's true, that's why you just save it as a new file name in your dropbox folder, I learned this with my passwords.
Just delete the old ones.

Fact is if you are any kind of worker, keeping a resource folder synced across all your computers is invaluable.

I'm a pretty bad ass worker. But for what I do, that is completely unnecessary.

The computer I use for video work is a MONSTER. My laptop and other computers couldn't begin to do what it does.

As for my work as an affiliate...I do it on three computers including my laptop. But my stuff is on my OWN servers online.

I just can't see why anybody would put anything of value up on a server owned by someone else. But I guess a lot of folks do. Or maybe they don't have their own boxes and/or know how to set their stuff up to sync (if they want to)

For my everyday work...it just wouldn't be necessary at all. And for backing up the paysite...Of course I do one at the hosting company. But I also have a ubuntu OS machine sitting here that I put a script on to download and update any new files that go up on the site everyday.

So I have a complete working version that updates itself everyday. Just a small computer with a 3TB drive in it. No need to put my stuff up on somebody else's box.

Anyway, just my viewpoint. You guys all seem to like using online storage owned by others. I'll just stick to keeping possession of my stuff with boxes I own.

I keep a backup on my backup server online. And then the backup on the machine in my office as well. To much new stuff goes up everyday to carry drives and dvd's to a bank vault.

A safety deposit box costs me less than 50 euros/year and I already make a trip to the bank every now and then (for the normal bank stuff) so that's no extra cost. If my home and/or office burns down, I'll be back up and running in no time.
