:stop At a loss, need advice!

My puppy, Dromio, is 15 weeks old and is chewing EVERYTHING in site! HELP! I have never had a 'chewer' and I have been unsuccessful at breaking him of this habit. Suggestions? Ideas?

Oh, and does anyone in the LA area know how to stretch carpeting so I can hide from my landlord the 2 places he has ripped it away from the wall and DEVOURED it?!

GAH!

LOL, I feel your pain...

I had two rotties that ate my residence one time.

A few holes in the wall, lost a loveseat to them, tons of moulding, books, shoes, video tapes, etc..

best thing is catching them when they're at it and making a VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY loud noise.

and then there is banishment to a seperate room/kennel for a while for them to think about it....most dogs HATE being away from their owners...

other than that, just grin and bear it, puppies are a bitch, it was hell the first 18 months with my two heathens...

LOL! Several years ago I had two half labs (and half Something-that-jumped-over-the-fence) that ate:

8 shoes (1 from 8 different pairs - God forbid they'd eat a whole pair)
a 1x1 foot hole in the siding of my house
the entire wood baseboard of my guestroom
several holes in wall of that same room
wood lattice work that ran up the side of the house
a HUGE beautiful wild honeysuckle tree
THEIR doghouse!

I was gone during the day, they were bored. I had to wait for them to outgrow it. If you're home, try a squirt bottle of water or a can of change (shake it hard and it gets their attention). If not, get everything out his way. It's just like teething with a baby.

Call a carpet guy for the carpet. Good luck!!!!

LMAO I don't know if you could spray it on your thongs but everything else is ok I believe. It smells like rubbing alcohol so I could imagine what it tastes like.

Sprayed it on my hand when my puppy was in the nipping phase. Everytime she would come over and put her nose to my hand she would sneaze and then back away.

They sell it at PetSmart!

You have to get a water pistol and hit him with it each time he starts chewing or even thinks about it...

This should do the trick after a while!

Ya, I think ya gotta make it taste and smell bad for em (the bitter apple).. Also probably help if they have something acceptable to chew (tons of rawhide toys)

Cheers,

i used to work at a vet...the best thing to do is use stuff like bitter apple....and keep him in his "house" (cage) at night.

good luck...pups are lots of work but well worth it.

Get as many chew toys as possible for your puppy. Recommended you also get really big hard bones, bigger than your puppy. You can also get some spray and use that for stuff you don't want your puppy to chew on. Hope that helps.

Ok, I got him bones that are almost too big for him and have been playing fetch for an hour (to tire him out some...I thought maybe he had too much energy)...now he has a NEW trick!

He liked the puddles in the rain SO much that he is now splashing all of the water out of the water dish!

ARGH!

I think this puppy is POSSESSED!

Go with the bitter apple suggestion. We use it on our furniture to keep the cats from scratching.. Works great !

Keep him in a crate if he is not either outside or being played with. Put 5 - 10 toys in the crate. When you play with him use those toys. If he starts to chew on something (you will know because you right there playing with him) Take it away and say no in a stern voice then give him one of his toys. After a couple of months your dog will be, chew trained, housebroken and will have a place (the crate) that he can call his own and will enjoy staying in.

Cayenne pepper is the answer. Buy a few packets or bottles of it, and sprinkle some on everything that the puppy might chew, but not on his toys. I'm sure it won't be long until he gets the message that his chew toys taste a lot better than anything else.

Cayenne also works to keep cats from putting dirty paw prints all over your car, and it's much better from a legal standpoint than shooting them. :D

We have five dogs and each one went through this period of time when they chewed our oak kitchen table. I thought I was being intelligent, by putting a combination of THE hottest pepper sauces I could find. I figured their delicate little mouths would lick once and they'd learn.

I was so wrong. They love hot peppers. Lapped up the sauce and ate more wood, until they outgrew it.

Puppies. Gotta love 'em.

When you can't watch him he needs to confined in a chew-free zone..whether that be a crate or kennel, a bathroom or kitchen, etc. When you do have time to watch him, if you see him go for something he's not supposed to, tell him NO very loudly, or clap your hand loud, etc....something to startle him. Then give him an appropriate chew toy. When you see him with his chew toys praise him highly like he's just been the best puppy in the world. Often deterants like bitter apple or hot sauce etc can work to give him a bad experience, but that may teach him not to chew a shoe, but unless you use it on everything he may possibly chew, there will still be problems.

Puppies and dogs chew for alot of reasons including boredom and lack of exercise. At this age, he's too curious to leave on his own. He could end up chewing and swallowing something that could injure or even kill him.

Absolutely. That "tone of voice" respect should be instilled from day one. Great post.

Puppies also chew stuff because it feels good on their tiny teeth.
