Server gurus step in~! (Solution to crashing server due to traffic spikes!)

What is the solution to this database error:
User 123456 already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections....

One of our sites hosted on a dedicated by itself cant seem to have more than 200-250 users online or it crashes.
What do you suggest? We have tried a 'cache' -- with no luck when big spikes of traffic hit.

Does this means its time to increase the server size?

If so, for a media transfer site, -would you rather 2 dedicated servers or just 1 high powered dedicated? What type of server is best for a High trafficked tube?

This error is hindering our growth--- someone help us out--

What would be the setup to have 10,000 people at a time uploading and viewing media at one time?

Someone help out-- lets do business host

so your saying you can't increase the max_user_connections value above 200-250 without it crashing?

Doubt it JCK, increase max_user_connections in the mysql config file.

what did your hosting company say ?

from the sounds of your post you should have a managed server with the kind of questions your asking.

Host gators default is: 25

They have it set to 25 on this dedicated server...they say they dont want to change it it. They are saying the problem is the code needs to be optimized... and upping the connections amount is just a temporary band-aid that will still not stop the problem, and maybe make it worse. Is this accurate?

Then sent me this in a email:

How to Optimize a MySQL Database using phpMyAdmin

Optimize Database
Repair Database

Optimize Table should be used if you have deleted a large part of a table or if you have made many changes to a table with variable length rows, such as VARCHAR, TEXT, BLOB or VARBINARY columns. Deleted rows are maintained in the linked list and insert operations reuse the old row positions. You can use "Optimize Table" to reclaim unused space and defragment the data file for optimal performance. If a lot of changes have been made to a table, optimizing the table can sometimes significantly improve performance.
Step 1: Login to phpMyAdmin

cPanel: (Shared, Reseller, SEO, Linux Dedicated, VPS with cPanel)

Login to cPanel
Click on the phpMyAdmin button in the Databases section.

Plesk 10: (Windows Shared, Windows Dedicated, VPS with Plesk)

Login to Plesk
Click on the Websites & Domains tab.
Click on the Databases icon.
Click on the database you want to manage.
Click on the Webadmin icon.

Step 2: Optimize Tables

Select the database you want to optimize from the list in the left column, which should take you to the "structure" tab for the database.
Select the tables you wish to optimize by checking the check box in front of each one, or clicking on Select All if you want to optimize all of them.
On the drop down box that says "with selected..." select "Optimize Table." This will optimize the table and take you to a new screen.

what is the point of a dedicated server if the host dictates what the settings are on it. Do you not have root access to login and change it yourself? The default is max_user_connections=0 which is no limit.

If you want to run media sites you will have to find solid hoster which knows how to tune site to make sites running smooth. If you aren't allowed to do basic tweaking then there is really nothing you can do except to migrate somewhere else.

First check the slow query log, EXPLAIN the queries, and add the needed indexes so fewer connections are required. Then increase max connections and benchmark with and without persistent connections.

Hostgator's flat out refusal is in my opinion unacceptable. When we invite webmasters to host with us, we FIX such problems, not refuse to cooperate. (Yes we still do some hosting - for established clients only, we refer most people elsewhere, so this isn't intended to spam it.)
