Anyone mix their alcohol with water?

I went down the hall to some Indian family my kid hangs out with, and the father always tries to get me to come in.. So I went in one time, and he offers me a drink, I think it was whiskey.. And he mixes it with water... I was like wtf?! But I guess it's not that weird... Not so harsh, less hangover, no added calories... It wasn't that bad.

Now I'm not suggesting dousing your 15 year old scotch with water.. But does anyone else here do this?

yep common, it actually extends the booze and its more of an efficiency thing than anything. More mass in you stomache takes longer to 'digest'. the longer its in there the longer its able to 'effect' you. ONce its past the liver and what not its useless. Water to scotch and whiskey is nothing but an extension. Well maybe a flavor deterrent.

Cool thanks for the info, I'll give it another go. It was pleasant to drink, no complaints. When I was a teenager we used to get someone to buy us a few mickeys every weekend, walk around and drink it straight with no chaser... Bunch of idiots. Should have been doing this I guess.

What's a good ratio?

I worked one christmas at the LCBO here (liquor store in Ontario Canada) and we weren't a big store.. But they said we were the #1 seller of Crown Royal in the world, because of all the Indians who live around the area.

In Japan, Mizuwari ("mixed with water"), is one of the most popular ways to drink whiskey and there is a whole ritual to it. In fact, you can purchase a bottle of whisky at a pub, and then when you leave you put your name on the bottle so that you can drink from it again when you come back (big clubs may also use numbers to help find your specific bottle on your next visit).

While I lived in Japan, my friends and I used to have bottles at like a dozen clubs, so that wherever we went, we could party without having to pack lots of cash (came in handy in between paydays, too).

The bars still make money, because some charge a table charge (think taxi meter), while others oblige you to pay for overpriced snacks, and of course there are hostess bars, where Japanese (and sometimes foreign) hotties will hang all over you if you buy them a Ladies drink (usually way overpriced tea).

The popularity of Mizuwari probably has something to do with Shochu already being a popular Japanese indigenous alcoholic drink, which is traditionally cut/mixed with water.

Absolutely true - the scotch should not be mixed with any water/ by default. In fact I've heard about that recently. It should be consumed clean with this thing only : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haggis

But what I see around and it's pretty common is to have tons of ice cubes added to the whiskey, served with peanuts or other kernels.... - not the real thing.
******

The dude who invited you didn't knew that the real men are using the water to wash their hands and neck - when it's warm...
And eventually to wash the cock after having sex (although the real men are using the best silk curtains for that job - especially after messy anal ) .... Also the real man will keep the water to give it to the horse - after all this is everything a man should have...
a horse, a piece of curtains /from the good ones and a good 15 years old scotch...

Sorry to ask like offtopic but is it true that some of the hostesses in bars, or establishments can "help" you relief the stress as a part of their service ? ( I don't talk about whore house or escort clubs)
Or this is another urban legend ?

When I was a teenager I saw a guy sit around sipping a scotch and water. I thought that was weird because I always drank as much as possible as fast as possible. Water would get in the way.

It turns out, I was the weird one. Apparently most people enjoy the flavors in a mixed drink. For me a glass was quite optional.

how much water are we talking? half a teaspoon will open up the scotch/whisky and allow more flavors and aromas to hit the palate.

sounds like you are talking about dropping a shot into a tall glass of water. that's a complete waste, if you ask me.

compared to mixing a 12 year old whiskey with a 50 cent can of coke? hehe i don't think so.

its just a splash normally and doesn't kill the flavour like adding sugar to it does.

I just add ice, keeps it cold on a hot day and seems to add just enough water as it melts

A little bit of water actually opens up the flavor and is not only common but recommended by serious scotch enthusiasts. Learned that in England in a bar that specialized in single malts.
