Hungry Man Dinner Review

First thing I notice, is that the box does not have "Swanson" printed anywhere on it. It says "Salisbury Steak", it says "1lb", it says "HUNGRY-MAN". It also says, "Satisfy Your Craving". Eek... Oh... I'm still going to eat it, though... Its a blue box, says "HUNGRY MAN" all over it, but I have no idea who makes it. Most of the printing is too small for me to read...

Now, the last time I ate one of these things, it came in an aluminum serving tray. This is a black plastic affair, and it tells me I need to preheat my over to 350 degrees.

Quote:
Aside #1: My dad left in 1970. My mom had to raise me and my sister all on her lonesome, work a full time job, and pay off a mortgage with no help from "The Old Man" (who is - alas - still alive...)

So, Swanson TV dinners, Kraft dinner, and Shopsy's hotdogs played a huge role in my up-bringing.
Ok. TV dinners were HUGE in the late '60s through the '70s. I now have a big blue box with 1lb!!! of food in it. The plastic scares me a bit, but I'm waiting for my oven to preheat. Then I am going to eat this shit.

Quote:
[SIZE="1"]Aside #2: I just turned the box over and happened to catch the insane wall of text list of ingredients in this package. The text of the box says, "Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy, Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans with a Brownie. The back of the box disagrees with that, though...
Ok. Oven's hot. Gonna toss it in there 35 minutes...

I'm back. Update in half an hour.

You betcha...

I just pulled it out of the oven about 15 minutes ago. Gonna let it rest (not interested in eating 350 degree food...)

I have to admit it smells fantastic, though. I'll let it drop to about 120-150 degrees, I'll dig in, and I'll report back in a bit.

You could have made the same thing from scratch, probably cheaper, and much healthier in the same time that it took to prepare the dinner.

Funny story.

The last time I ate one of them I was still working for GTS, so it would have been the middle of 07. We were sitting around playing Wii and I found a bone fragment in it that was about as big as my thumbnail. Many hours later I was sick as a dog with food poisoning which had me out of commission for 3 days.

I have never eaten another one of them since.

It wasn't bad. Tasted great, but I feel a bit nauseous - always a good sign. I think I can flush the sodium out of my system with a good run and a couple bottles of water.

Yeah, I don't feel too good right now....

Looking at the title I thought you were going to review a Gay DVD.

I would think the plastic is so you can microwave it. Many condolences though, I hope I never see a TV dinner again, much less eat one.

And a pound of food? That would be two dinners for me these days.

TV Dinners are nothing today like they were 40 years ago.

What was your reasoning for purchasing this? Curiosity? I do the same thing at the grocery store.

I am a sucker for cool boxes.

If you cooked what was in the box yourself from scratch it would have cost a few dollars more but been a million times better.

Edit: It cracks me up how the marketing never resembles the actual product. Why can't they just make decent frozen food? lol

Frozen Pizzas really annoys me they are all horrible.

Hungry Man is the best of the microwavable dinners. I get them quite often. Cigs and beer have got to be worse for you than those things.

Amen to that. I made a huge batch of shepherds pie and picked up those aluminum containers and froze them. Probably the best kitchen gadget is one of those vacuum sealers. I make batches of chicken fingers for my kid and chicken Parmesan and seal them. Works for chilli, stew, pasta sauce, individual lasagne, you name it. Then whenever you are rushed for time grab something out of the freezer and you know exactly what is in your dinner.
