:stop The Black Death is coming!

Quote:
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Health officials have confirmed that an Oregon man has the plague after he was bitten while trying to take a dead rodent from the mouth of a stray cat.
The unidentified Prineville, Ore., man was in critical condition on Friday. He is suffering from a blood-borne version of the disease that wiped out at least one-third of Europe in the 14th century ? that one, the bubonic plague, affects lymph nodes.

The plague is still floating around in places like Africa all the time anyway just not spreading as it did in the 14th century.

The plague is spread by flease.

Rats simply carry the flies.

It cannot break out today simply as we bath and do not wear untreated clothes.

When the plague first spread, the flies could easily live in out clothes. Plus we were much closer to the rats that carried the fies.

We do not come into contact with rats as we once did. And rat population is not as dense as it was.

The conditions are simply not there these days for it to spread.

But as I say its not the rats that spread it (they unfaily get the blame) its the flies that lived on the rats.

In the uS for years

http://www.cdc.gov/plague/maps/index.html
"The last urban plague epidemic in the United States occurred in Los Angeles from 1924 through 1925"

Been in the US since 1900s. Most cases are in the western states. Now mostly in the mountains of New Mexico.

This is all true but you're forgetting one thing and that is humans don't get exposed to something from time to time, their immune system gets lazy and loses natural resistance against that particular virus, and viruses develop over time.

I think it's good, the world is over populated, we can use a few nasty viruses.

A flea engorged with blood. Infected fleas can spread the plague to humans and animals with bites.

The word you're looking for is 'mutable,' viruses are highly mutable - often changing their surface proteins so that whatever antibodies you have that are specific for recognizing the original protein coat are no longer effective against the newer strains. This is a major reason why effective HIV drugs have been so long coming (HIV is EXTREMELY mutable), and also the reason why it is encouraged to get flu shots every year as the vaccine changes to target newer strains.

However, the plague is caused by a bacteria, Y. pestis, and not a virus.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes mutable was indeed the word I was looking for. My brain's bloody tired today...
And didn't know it was caused by a bacteria.
By the way someone gave me a chicken some time ago and a few weeks later all my cats were walking around with tons of fleas, turned out the chicken was infected and passed them on to my cats... fucking hell. Frontline drops in the neck of the cats didn't help so I've been spraying all animals with flea killer the past days, including the chicken.
