Train to JFK/Long Island from PA?

I have a conference to be at Thursday in NYC but staying at a friends place in Long Island. Anyone know of any "short cuts" to get into long island from PA without paying $100 each way for a train ticket?

I had friends that used to go to NYC for weekends and would take a train to NJ then train to the city, but no clue how it was done

trying to avoid the train/subway/bus switch going through the city. Less I have to deal with that, the better... regardless of bill size

You should be able to catch a train from Philly to Penn Station for around $50. Then you just get on the LIRR to get out to the island.

Shouldn't have any changes other than at Penn.
