Your friends could be the proud owner of a rare collectible.
(for only a grand or so) available at my Playboy Collectors Store

Never Issued Specimen from circa 1970's. This Playboy Enterprises, Inc Specimen Stock Certificate is extremely rare. A specimen stock certificate is like a first draft or an artist proof. Only a few of these were made.
    nothing to promote

      Stocks

Shop around for bargains. When my son was born people gave us cash gifts. I took the cash and bought a couple of stocks, but usually 10 or so shares. One was a electric company in the toilet as they had to write off a nuke plant they were building stock went from $30 to $6 and stopped the dividend. His $60 investment is now worth about $2000 plus he gets about $150 a year in dividends.

Scottrade charges $7 per trade, whether it's one share or 10,000. If you're in the US you should probably have a brokerage account anyway - we all know it's mathematically impossible for social security to last but a few more years.
