Is it possible to buy one stock?

Friends of mine are getting married and we have an ongoing joke about a particular department store. They would get quite a laugh if I could get them something specific to that department store, I was thinking a stock certificate (one of them is into stocks.)

    Is this possible?

I know i think i had that question before for a stock broker and you can't do it , you could get like a mutual fund , and see if you could get all stock from one source but I don't know im just a fucking shoebox.

Yes you can buy just one stock, and last I heard it was still possible to request the physical paper for the stock as well, even from an online brokerage but it takes time.

If you're smart enough to buy 1 share in a company, you're smart enough to pay $39 for a piece of paper.

Its an interesting 'gag' gift that I think is great for kids - They will be logging on to Google Finance every day to see what their McDonald's share is worth.....

If you want to give the gift that keeps on giving, buy them 1 share of Apple. Get multiple friends in on it if you have to cuz it's pretty expensive.

Shop around for bargains. When my son was born people gave us cash gifts. I took the cash and bought a couple of stocks, but usually 10 or so shares. One was a electric company in the toilet as they had to write off a nuke plant they were building stock went from $30 to $6 and stopped the dividend. His $60 investment is now worth about $2000 plus he gets about $150 a year in dividends.

Scottrade charges $7 per trade, whether it's one share or 10,000. If you're in the US you should probably have a brokerage account anyway - we all know it's mathematically impossible for social security to last but a few more years.
