Yes you can buy just one stock, and last I heard it was still possible to request the physical paper for the stock as well, even from an online brokerage but it takes time.

Its an interesting 'gag' gift that I think is great for kids - They will be logging on to Google Finance every day to see what their McDonald's share is worth.....

Fantastic educational tool, better than a dozen math(s) classes....

If you want to give the gift that keeps on giving, buy them 1 share of Apple. Get multiple friends in on it if you have to cuz it's pretty expensive.
