Louis Theroux: How the internet killed porn

http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/20...orn?CMP=twt_gu

Very interesting article. The doc will be on BBC this Sunday I think?

The fundamental flaw in porn right now is the fragmentation of girls with that are competing with tube sites which are out ranking the individual site. Google is the really reason why porn is dying. Take the tube sites out of Google and all of a sudden girl sites and studio sites return to the results.

Hey Roald, how is things? I thought about you when googling on some Eastern European porn stars the other day, you've got your site ranked pretty damn well ;-)

I found Louis docs on pedos in a Canadian mental hospital and Johanesburg crime very impressive, this guy has the guts to go anywhere. I can't watch his doc on BBC because I don't have it on my sat but it will probably be on Dutch TV soon as well.

The search engine problem is covered by ACTA and the European parlement will be voting about ACTA soon.

Personally I think porn is heaving a hard time due to bad quality and too many people producing the same thing. On a forum someone made a comparisment with music. Best music and best porn were made in the 70s and 80s and personally I totally agree with that.

how do you sustain an industry that provides a certain standard of product ? be it journalism, music, or mainstream movies, or X-rated movies ? when more and more consumers are in the habit of downloading content for free? In the world of porn, the answer is: you can't.
Time to leave the business.

I cant stand Louis Theroux....

There is just something about him that makes me want to thump him though the screen.

You can almost see him pinching kids arms when he wants them to cry for the cameras.

It's all about fragmentation of distribution. Just as iTunes saved the music industry from itself, a platform will eventually evolve that will save porn. Getting everyone onboard with that platform is the real challenge.

It will kill the affiliate model as we know it. iTunes slashed the price of music. The only place left to slash is the affiliates budget.

Tube sites are legal if they follow the DMCA law or buy all the content. If you think surfers are too dumb to find free porn without using Google, you're part of the problem.

For the last 12 or more years we largely treated the surfers like sheep. Thinking they were here to be fleeced, too dumb to know different and would keep buying.

Started a thread after seeing a program about the Internet and the survivors of the Internet Bubble Burst of 2000. And how the big successful companies got like that by concentrating on providing the customer with what they wanted, a good customer experience and treating them well.

As buttfly said, no one is interested in my opinion. It's not an opinion, it's fact.

iTunes didn't slash the price of music. 99 cents a track is pro rata what an album costs.

Thanks for trying to understand though.

What iTunes did, and what I've been saying we need for years, is put everything in one place, make it a great experience, and make buying easy. Even amazon one click is more hassle than iTunes.

@Paul ... not sure how that's dumb. MOST of the good converting traffic comes in from organic search traffic. Especially for specific models. Affiliate traffic depends on it. If you don't think Google is a major factor, just look at their last update and how it fucked a bunch of affiliate programs.

That's what I do. I give lovers or various niches the best possible porn in their niche and my member database continues growing. Despite all the piracy this year is going to be my best sales so far.

That's why I think the reason porn is having a hard time is lack of quality and originality.

Louis Theroux doesn't know everything, he didn't interview me or you. Some points in the article are still interesting though, especially the point that it's morally accepted not to pay for porn.
