    ☮ ♥ ✌ ☯ ★ Cosplay (Costume Play) Pix - ADG Style ★ ☯ ✌ ♥ ☮

    This past weekend there was a large 4-day Cosplay convention in the Bay Area. For those who don't know, Cosplay (Kospure コスプレ) is a Japanese morph of the words "Costume" and "Play".

    Cosplay has developed into several subcultures of participants and fans that enjoy dressing up as various characters, and creating performance art. The sources of inspiration are quite varied, ranging from anime, to manga, to comics, to video games, to movies, etc.

    Many cosplayers create their own costumes, some of which are quite elaborate...

    While much of the appeal is with kids, there is also a large adult-oriented Cosplay niche as well, which is an area that is explored occasionally on Asian Diva Girls.

    Some of the models that I work with are into the Cosplay scene, so I decided to set up a few projects in conjunction with a Cosplay convention. We ended up shooting lots of fun pix and some pretty hot videos too.

    Here are some Day 1 samples - Enjoy!:





















    In all, we attended 3 of the 4 days of the show, and we did several photo and video projects each night:

                                                  Even the people within the Cosplay scene know that to non-cosplayers they appear slightly more goofy than Star Trek/Star Wars convention attendees. Some cosplay nerd guys are even referred to as "Otaku", meaning"

                                                  Young people who are highly skilled in or obsessed with computer technology to the detriment of their social skills.
                                                  Generally speaking, calling someone an otaku in Japan is an insult, implying that their social skills have atrophied or never even developed, due to their manic involvement in their chosen fandom.

                                                  In America, the term is used to denote a zealous fan, usually of anime and/or manga. Due to its introduction to most people's vocabulary through its tongue-in-cheek use in Gainax's film, "otaku" tends to have a much less dire definition overseas.

                                                  When dealing with Japanese people, however, it may be best to keep in mind the modern Japanese image of an otaku -- Someone who only leaves their home to eat or shop, if at all, with an overwhelming and unhealthy obsession about something. It can as easily refer to a stalker or sociopath as it can to a harmless anime buff.

                                                  True that...after determining if an interviewee was over 18, some people were asked if they ever had sex in costume, or if dressing in cosplay helped them get laid. Since people were expecting the questions, the answers were hilarious.

                                                  The Cosplay show was way fun, so we couldn't wait to shoot some sexy pix using the cosplay outfits which we picked up (the blonde model actually made some of her own outfits - we did several costume changes over the days):

                                                                                                              As with cosplay, there is an air of fantasy in creating adult entertainment (at least the type that I create), so I can really appreciate the creative effort that went into some of the costumes and productions that we saw at Fanimecon 2012.

                                                                                                              Aside from that, I learned that a lot of cosplay people are pretty funny/campy, and that for some, cosplay is an extension of their personalities (or in some cases their alter egos).
